Does anyone know of any cookery courses in the West Midlands?

Preferably south of the West Midlands.

Nothing fancy, I'm not into cake making either. Just a normal kind of course.

I've never taken a cookery course though, neither has my wife. We do own a range of cookery books, generally by cooks rather than chefs. Delia Smith, Jane Grigson, her daughter Sophie, Floyd on Fish, Floyd on France, Good Housekeeping Cookery Book, Elizabeth David, Claudia Roden, Nigel Slater. Many are available secondhand.

That is quite an impressive school Derek. Seems very well grounded with their offerings not too “over the top” cooking for normal people!

Their farm shop is good too. You could book a trial day or two and spend money on a decent chefs knife sized to suit your hands and paring knife? Fresh farm veg, meat and fish tend to be expensive too.

The longer leisure classes always start in September, but you might find a January one? There's a cookery school in Harbourne but at present they seem to have themed days too.

I learned to make omelette and when making stew, brown the meat first adding wine and shooting chopped fresh parsley in at the end. Elizabeth David 'French Provincial Cooking'. She was a snob, but funny to read! I cooked selectively through the book.

But it depends what you want to cook. If you are cooking for your family or your partner, you want them to enjoy it. A final thought, there are many cookery videos. The Hairy Bikers are fairly practical.
