Coalpacker?

Ewan

I think I know the answer to my question but I thought I would put it to you to see what your opinions were.

I have a man on 2 censuses, one his occupation is as a 'carter' and the other one his occupation is described as a 'waggoner'. I have a certificate where the occupation reads as a 'coalpacker' well at least I think that is what it says. Would the 3 occupations be the same or linked to each other?
Welcome any ideas please.

I'd think they are related - may even be the same thing. Someone who drives (or even owns) a cart or wagon and delivers coal in sacks.
Usually a cart is one axle, 2 wheels and a wagon is two axles, 4 wheels.

Carter and waggoner, same thing really, just a matter of size, and he carted (delivered) coal.
When having a delivery,I always ask if I have to pay cartage.
When he was younger he could have been a backman (drivers mate) untill he learnt the trade.

Thanks that is what I thought. I have the occupation of 'coalpacker' as mentioned on a certificate and was hoping that the person who it related to was the same one as in the censuses. Sadly though this was a source of elimination and not the person I am looking for.
