Claydon Business Handsworth

parabellum

proper brummie kid
This might be a massive stab in the dark. While looking threw census's i seen my ggg grand father owned a business but does not state the name or address of business. When he passed away (1898) i can see from the 1901 census that it seems the wife had taken over the business.

They lived on WattsVille Street in Handsworth/St James on 1891 and 1901 census where it shows Joseph and Sophia owning a business.

Joseph Claydon (1836) is the Original owner and was taken over by his wife Sophia Wall(1837) after his death.

Is there anyone out there with any information on the company that he ran. I know its very little information just hoping maybe someone who has researched companies in this area or maybe other geneologists who have research the claydon line.

Kind Regards and a big thank you for any information.

The following are from Birmingham directories:

1888 Claydon Joseph, shopkeeper & beer retailer, 202 Wattville road, Handsworth
1890 Claydon Joseph, shopkeeper, 105 Wattville road, Handsworth
1892-1897 Claydon Joseph, shopkeeper, 89 Wattville road, Handsworth
1899-1904 Claydon Sophia Mrs, shopkeeper, 89 Wattville road, Handsworth
1905-1915 Claydon Joseph H. shopkeeper, 99 Wattville road.Handswrth
1921-1937 Claydon Joseph H. coal dealer, 99 Wattville road,Handswrth
Shopkeeper in directories usually means a small general shop selling confectionert, cigarettes, and some food & domestic products. It looks like he started with this sort of shop with an off licence to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises, moved around a bit and stopped selling alcohol. His (son ?) carried on and then went into the coal trade
Also
1899 Claydon John Edward beer retailer 153 Schofield St
1903 Claydon Fred, beer retailer,. 160 New Town row
There is also an enameller, a draper and a fired fish shop owner named Claydon, all after 1900
