Claverdon Street

Maris

master brummie
I`ve just started tracing my family tree and 1st off what a great site this is !
My Great x3 Grandfather was Charles Keight who lived at No 5 (ct 1?) Claverdon St in 1861. According to current maps it no longer exists and would appear to be roughly where Bloomsbury Walk is now. I was wondering if anyone had any more info ?
Thanks
Maris

Map replaced , but not by same map

The Red cross shows Claverdon St and I thought you might like these from 1891. Because Cromwell St is just to the left of the cross .... Couldn't find your John, but if he was a coal carter he may have been on the canel in 1891 with his family at the time the Cen's was taken.

Hi Pomgolian, thanks for the reply. Interesting that there is a John Keight from - "
Inkbow, Leicestershire" think this should be Inkberrow Worcestershire, the Keights seem to originate from Inkberrow around this time, see here
My John Keight and his family was in the 1881 census and he was a coal carter, then in the 1901 Census as a Gas works labourer, I cant find him or anyone from his family in the 1891 census so maybe he was on the canal, even with 5 children ?
What exactly was a coal carter ?
Thanks
Maris

A Coal Carter shipped the coal by Barges (Whole families were involved and lived on the Barges) from the coal mines up /down the canals to the Gas Works. There were three Gas Works in the area of Birmingham close to where your Keight's lived.
Put Barge, or Canals in the search box at the top of the page and heaps of threads and posts with pictures and info' will come up. I would also say that both the families in Cromwell St were related to your own in some way.
