Clarke Family of Ladywood

Sandra F

knowlegable brummie
I am researching the Clarke Family from the Broad Street, Ladywood Area. Last member known about was Samuel Clarke who in 1926 was the informant on his mother, Elizabeth's death certificate, and was living in Bridge Street West at the time.

Samuel Clarke is listed on the 1920 – 25 electoral rolls as being at no 5 court 17 Bridge st west , which is between no 160 and 161 Bridge st west . In 1925 Alfred Clarke was also living there. He is listed on the absent voters register in 1918 at the same address as 409250, Pte, ASC. In 1930 and 1935 he is at the same address with Rosetta Clarke , presumably either the same as Rose or his daughter. In 1939 he and rosetta wre at 58 Bridge St west. In 1945 and 1950 she is at no 4 back 163 BSW. In 1950 it is with Frederick & Nellie Roberts.

Thanks for this very useful information. Samuel Clarke was my father's uncle. All I need now is to find some descendants of Samuel and Rosetta.

Hi Sandra
I wonder if we have the same Clarke Family here ? My mums name is Rosalind Doreen Clarke Daughter of John Thomas Clarke who was killed in an airraid in Birmingham . His siblings were Elizabeth , Frank, Elsie ,Joyce, and Irene ranging from 1903 to 1917 all Aston/bordesley green and Birmingham area . Their father was Thomas Clarke !878 and their Grandfather was Samuel Clerk 1842 Tubedrawer . . Any of this ring a bell ? Have you come across these people . Mum lost contact with all her family due to being sent to an orphanage in the war . Any ideas ? regards Jean

I don't think there's any connection, but you never know. My Samuel was born in 1875 and his father was John Thomas Clarke, a tube drawer, who died in 1891. There's some similar names but the dates are too early for yours. My father, Albert Clarke, was brought up in Marston Green Orphanage so it's been hard for me also to piece together any information about the family.

Good hunting!

H SANDRA
There was a couple of clarke familys knocking around the ladywood area in previous years
i think the main one was clarkes the scrap metal dealerthat family lived in ledsam street lady wood
which was just behind broad street with in walking distance of about 5 minutes walk
and the other clarke lived at the bottom of ledsam street across the other side of the rd facing which was
beech street ladywood 5 mins walk again from there yard ladywod again
and there was another clarke down the monument rd about two blocks away
the one down the monumen rd which was in spring hill passage a back to back house
the lads name was keneh clarke i am not to sure what his mothers name was
all these was in the very early 1900 hundreds through until the very early fifties
so if you have not done a cencus check around these rds it may be wrth a scan to do so for the chrisian
names , oh by the way there was nobby clarke whom lived in heath st winson green
he bought the pawn shop from some-body on ickneild port rd lady wood
and then bought another shop down dudley rd winson green in the 60,s or 70 ,s
best of luck on yor research Astonian ;;

Hi Sandra I think there mat be a connection but perhaps in the way of cousins . The thing is My Sam Clarke was a tube Drawer and his Son Thomas Clarke was a Tube drawer too . I suspect your Sam Clarke may be a cousin of My Grt Grandad Thomas Clarke . I would like you to see my census as You will see what I mean . I will send you my E mail address in Private Message and then I can send you my details and you can see for yourself . if family names are similar and family trade too and also the area is similar as well I think there is a connection . But probably if Your John Thomas Clarke was a brother to My Grt Grt grandad Sam (Tuber Drawer ) That would explain Same Occupation .
Then Your Sam 1871 would be the cousin of my Thomas Clarke 1878 ( Tube maker) along with sister Georgina who also worked in the Tube Industry Other Siblings were Samuel Clarke 1871, William 1873 George 1875 and Sarah 1880 .
My Thomas Clarke probably went on to name his son John Thomas Clarke 1906-1940 (My Grandad ) After his uncle ? He went on to name One of his other sons Albert born 1925 . This is the last of my mums Uncles who she is hoping is still alive . But I doubt it .

What do you think we just need to find a 1841 census with a 1 year old Sam Clarke and a brother John Thomas . Its an educated Guess dont you think ?
best Wishes Jean .

Hi Sandra .. Bingo
I have found on the 1851 Census that Your John 12 is the older Brother of my Sam 9 their dad being named James . Dont worry about the lack of E on the end it happens . My family stayed in and around Garrison lane for almost a century . Their eldest brother James is a gas tube maker . The siblings all have same names passed down the generations .
In the 1861 census John has obviously left home as he would have been 22 . My Sam was still at home at 19 yrs old Having looked at the census I am pretty certain its all connected .
I have sent me E mail address .
Regards Jean
