Hi,:)
My grandfather, George Frederick Clarke, was born 04 May 1886. The address on his birth certificate is 6 Bishop Street, Birmingham. Could somewone please look up and see who was livng there, whether it was a residence or commercial property.
Thanks for everything you do.

Your question is a little complicated by the fact that some streets in birmingham were renumbered around 1890. Bishop St was one of these, being numbered consecutively down one side and then up the other before renumbering, but odd to the west side and even to the east after renumbering. The date on the Kellys directories can usually be taken to be a year later than when the information was collected. In the 1884 directory no 6 is not listed. In the directory marked 1888 (which was probably actually taken in 1887) nos 2,4,6 and 8 are all occupied by Huxley, Barton and Matterson, merchants.

Thank you, Mike,
I really appreciate you looking up this information. On the birth certificate it states that George's mother's occupation was a house keeper. Would that have been an appropriate job for someone who worked at Huxley, Barton, and Matterson? Only the mother's name, Mary Ann Clarke, and the child of record, George Frederick, is listed on the certificate. Any suggestions on how we might find out anything more about them?
With regards,
Don

I don't think you can rule out the housekeeper in a commercial firm. Merchant could have meant a house attached to the business. Googling doesn't give anything, so would be best to see if you can find out about kellys for intervening years, and contact the birmingham library to see if they have something on the firm
