Hi everyone, I'm trying to research my Grandma's family from Ladywood. They were John Clark/Clarke (born 1867 in Birmingham) and Ruth Edith Bradley (born 1866 in Harborne). I can't find a marriage for them so I can't confirm if I've found the right parents for John - I haven't any problem's with Ruth Edith's family. John's family was supposed to Irish and the only ones I can match him up with are Martin and Bridget Clark/Clarke (born Galway - married in Birmingham) but without a marriage certificate I can't say they are deffinatly the ones. Do they ring a bell with any one? (John's surname is spelt with or without an 'e' on different census' but later on it was always spelt with the 'e'.) Their last address was Leach Street Ladywood- John died there in 1921 and Ruth died there in 1937.

thank you

Hi, yes that's them. Thank you. It's his mother and father I'm having trouble linking to him. The family I think are his parents have, on the 1891 census, have a John at the address of the right age - this John is listed as married so I'm wondering could he have been in 2 places at once or is one census return lying or have I got the wrong family- I hope it's not the later as I can't find another family with an Irish connecton and a son called John born in around 1867!

Yes it can happen , as I have the same situation in 1881:

Household:1881 Cen
Name Relation Marital Status

Guy TARONE Head M Male 38 Stafford, England Brassfounder
Sarah Ann TARONE Wife M Female 39 Birmingham, Warwick, England Laundress
(Prev' Hampton)
Edwin TARONE Son U Male 16 Birmingham, Warwick, England Polisher
Ada HAMPTON Daur In Law(Step Daur) U Female 14 Birmingham, Warwick, England Florence TARONE Daur U Female 1 Birmingham, Warwick, England
Clara HAMPTON Daur In Law (Step Daur) U Female 7 Birmingham, Warwick,England Annie HAMPTON Daur In Law (Step Daur) U Female 4 Birmingham, Warwick,England
Clara TARONE Mother Female 70 Stafford, England
Moland St No 40 Birmingham, Warwick, England

Not sure how, but Sarah Ann also managed to be at my Grt/Grt/gran's place on the 1881 cen's too. She must have popped just down the street to see that Gran was ok with the numerater comming and he even put down as Hampton not Tarone.

Household:1881 Cen
Name Relation Marital Status
Miria HAMPTON Head W Female 60 Birmingham, Warwick, England Laundress
Sarahann HAMPTON Daur In Law M Female 39 Birmingham, Warwick, England Laundress
Moland St No 99 Birmingham, Warwick, England

Hope this helps
