Clarendon Pub in Temple Street - 1963

Brummie babby
Can anyone remember the name of the pub that stood on the site which is now occupied by LloydsTSB in Temple Row. I used to go there after work with my then boyfriend, (now husband), in 1963 but, unfortunately, we cannot remember what it was called.

The Shakespear and the Temple Bar were next to each other, still there I think.
Going uphill from there was the Trocadera,or something like that,at the top of the hill was the general or the admiral something, and round the corner was the Old Royal.
If thats any help.

hi guys ,
i am very hasten to say that avriljean is quite right to say there was another
pub up temple st half way up if i remember correctly it was abit of a funny set up
it was built a litle bit like the cabin was only in reverse order on entry
and it was nt much of a pub i did not particular like it because of its lay out if was rare that we would pop in for a pint but for the love normoney i just cannot put a name to it at this precise moment ray i think you may be right when you say the admirl because there was if i remember whilst tapping here there was a red ships rope on the two stair cases you walk up and that about all so it could have been the admiral bearing in mind temple st was not as big as it was today in those days it would have been boots on the corner andthe pub would have been about 1 hundred yards up pass there but for years it was an ice cream parlour then the machine arcade ==yes ,? , safter allthat yes i ambeging to think it was the admiral in a agreement with you
best wishes ray astonian ;;

The Clarendon was on the corner, facing St.Philips churchyard, just along from the back of Rackhams.

I was up there a few weeks ago in that area, not sure if it was bennetts hill or temple st but the pub was the wellington real ale pub.
anywhere near to what you want.
regards dereklcg.

Thanks for all your replies to my posting. I'm pretty sure Ray was right with the Clarendon. You were spot-on with your description of the location. Thanks a lot Ray.

As a little lad during the war I remember going with older boy's to carry the soldiers luggage on a handcart, from New St.station to Snow Hill station, the Clarendon at the top of the hill was the ideal spot to rest, while the soldiers,I presume, stopped for a quick half.

I remember the trocadero, one hell of a fight there around 1964, the stained glass door shattered, I was in uniform and to be involved in a public affray was a grievouse military offence whilest wearing the queens uniform, I remember running towards Colmore row and St Chads as the black mariers, and westminster police cars were schreeching to a halt outside it., and wondering if I would be picked up I did'nt stop till the cafe by Snow hill station

Hi everyone,

I seem to remember, if it is indeed Temple Street and not Temple Row, that the pub on the left almost at the top of the hill was 'The Nelson' so 'Admiral' was quite close!

Happy memories eh, Ray ;)

My memories are walking from Lewis`s (where we worked), crossing over Upper Bull Street, past Rackhams and into the Clarendon where we spent a few happy hours. ;)

the pub's name was the temple bar

A full list of all the watering holes in Temple Street & Lower Temple St.

The Claredon Hotel
The Trocadero
The Imperial Hotel
Temple Bar
Shakespeare Tavern.

As the Claredon was at the top of the hill, I think its the most likely contender.

Phil.
