Church Tavern, Bath Street (near St Chad's)

My Gt-Grandfather, William John "Jack" Elliott, gave this Tavern as his address when he married for the second time in 1912 - slim chance I know but would anyone have any info on the establishment - particularly any photo, picture, sketch etc? Many thanks

Tha Church Tavern is listed in the electoral roll as being at 38 Bath St. It is not described as such in 1912, but is in later years (names of pubs are only sometimes included). The landlord is listed as Oliver Collins, but states that he changed to 85 Bath St sometime in the year . Kellys of 1912 lists the same person , but just describes the place as a beer retailer (which can include a pub). The position is shown in red on the c 1910 map. Church Tavern is an appropriate name, St Chads opposite and the Bishops House next door across Weaman St.
I have a sort of a very bad picture of what must be part of the site, No date is given so one can’t be 100% sure it is that actual building. It occurs on the edge of a picture of the Bishops House. I have tried to crop and make a bit lighter . both original and crop are below.

Thanks again Mike for all your help, especially taking the time out to scan & crop the great pic and all the info. It would have been a great place (although tacky) to stay before you got married across the road (especially as he'd had a family fall-out with his parents having previously married a barmaid!). The map is also tremendously helpful. With all the redevelopment over the years it would seem to be under Queensway now, with Bath Street & Wearman street rerouted https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=52...52.485864,-1.89733&spn=0.003476,0.006899&z=17

Theres still 50yds of the original Bath St at the Loveday St end and the Gun Makers Arms is still there. Dek

Ive just found out my greatgrandfather lived in bath st at number 36. Less than 24hrs later I have a photo. This site is just brilliant.

Thats interesting Mike, my GGGrandfathers adresss was 36 court 5 h3 and his occupation was gun finisher. So he did'nt have far to travel to work. Thanks.

The Church Tavern must be before my time, but is the Gunmakers Arms still open? That used to be one of my favourite Sunday lunchtime haunts 30-odd years ago. The missus used to do great hot pork sandwiches, just the job to ruin my lunch.

Hi Mike,
I have just come across this thread with a reference to and a map showing Little Shadwell Street.
My grandfather was born at number 1 Little Shadwell Street in 1906.
Do you have an idea as to which of the buildings shown on the map may have been number 1.

Many thanks, Trish.

Sorry Trish, but none of the directories seem to give any number for buildings in that street, though I would think it was on the western side at one end o the street
