CHRIST CHURCH YARDLEY WOOd

Steve Crathorn

master brummie
Does anyone have a map of the church burial grounds, or if indeed there is a listing of memorial inscriptions held by anyone? There are a lot of graves there and i am going to look at the burial register at the Birmingham Reference Library on Tuesday to hunt for CRA(Y)THORN(E) burials. I do know that there are a few there. I have visited the church yard before but was horrified to see the graves mainly over grown.

I cannot help with a plan but like you I found the Churchyard much overgrown last time I visited. I understand that some improvements may have taken place but the parish have difficulty raising the necessary funds to maintain the Churchyard as they might wish. Contrast this with the way most Cemeteries in Scotland are well maintained and it really is a disgrace.

I mentioned the state of the Churchyard to a friend who made the observation that it suited him as his parents and sister's graves were surrounded by brambles which had the effect of keeping the vandals and drunks away from his family's graves which suited him. He keeps their graves well looked after but not the path to them.

All the best in your search.

Hi Bernie, both my parents died at Yardley Wood, one in 1950,the other /52, however they were both
cremated which was just coming in, otherwise they may well have been in the graveyard you mentioned
I was in the forces at the time. Good luck with your quest, Bernard

Thanks for the information Bernie.

I took a flying visit to the church yard this morning. They have done a really good job in clearing all the overgrowth away. All walkways to the graves are clear and as far as i can see all graves are accessable. Obviously there are one or 2 graves that are worse for ware. Unfortunately i didn't find the grave that i was looking for but following Bernard's comment there is a chance that only a service was held there and perhaps there was a cremation involved. I will make further investigations.

I have just had confirmation from Rev. John Richards at the church that the burial for Malcolm Crathorne did take place in 2010. He has informed me that he was buried with his Mom and Dad in the family grave and has given me a grave reference of W57. The question is, where is it?

Where my Dad and his first wife, is buried is plot 567 which is the other side of a hedge which runs at right angles to the canal. The plot would have been first used about 1937. Not really sure how the plots were allocated as the sister the person I mentioned above would not have been buried until Circa 1956 and that grave is closer to the Church than my Dad's grave. Perhaps the Vicar or Churchwarden could supply you with or let you view a plan?

Have been back to the church yard and found my grave, section W number 57. Whilst i was there i tried to make sense of the grave yard layout and have managed to draw a "homemade" layout (not the best of drawers, but might help someone. Will post next.

Apparently there is a listing of Monumental Inscriptions for "Christ church Yardley Wood" but it is only available for viewing "off the Shelf" at the SOG (society of genealogists). Apparently they can do copies of certain entries but a charge is made. Otherwise it's a trip to London. Here is the information that i have received;

We do have a copy of the memorial inscriptions for Yardley Wood in our library (Ref: WA/M20) but they are not for sale. However we could provide photocopies of some of the entries via our Search and Copy service (see https://www.sog.org.uk/library/searches.shtml for details of how to use this).
