Childhood prayers

rowan

Born a Brummie
Did you say your prayers as a child if so what were they?

I used to say......

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray oh Lord my soul you keep
If I should die before I wake
I pray oh Lord my soul you take.

Also............
Mathew Mark Luke and John,
Bless the bed that I lie on.
Four angels round my head
One to Watch, One to pray
Two to bear my soul away.
-------------------------------------
And grace.........

Thank you for the food we eat
Thank you for the world so sweet.
Thank you for the birds that sing
Thank you God for everything.

Arrh...........such innocent times.

They are the ones I used to say too. I had forgotten all the words, so thank you for sending them...lovely.

Before food we used to say 'For what we are about to receive, May the Lord make us truly gratefull'

I remember or half remember a prayer we used to recite at the end of the
day in junior school.

'Now the day is over, night is drawing nigh'

Anyone else know this one?

1. Now the day is over, night is drawing nigh;
shadows of the evening steal across the sky.

2. Jesus, give the weary calm and sweet repose;
With Thy tend'rest blessing may our eyelids close.

3. Grant to little children visions bright of Thee;
Guard the sailors tossing on the deep blue sea.

4. Thro' the long night watches, may Thine angels spread
their white wings above me, watching 'round my bed.

5. When the morning wakens, then may I arise
pure and fresh and sinless in Thy holy eyes.

Rowan your very first one we used to sing at the end of the evening at girl guides camp Kings Norton. The only difference being after each line you would sin Angels or Angels watching over me.

The first prayer I was taught came from the start of a Hymn, I later discovered.

"Gentle Jesus, meek and mild,
Look upon a little child;
Pity my simplicity,
Suffer me to come to Thee.
"
There then followed a "God bless..." and a list of close family, and of course "Amen".

This has brought back memories of kneeling at my bedside, hands together, head bent, eyes closed and reciting it. If only the world had remained so innocent and pure to my eyes as I grew up...sadly, it was not so.

That is beautiful Lloyd, and yes what a pity life seems no longer so simple, I fear it never will again either.

Lovely to read the prayers in this thread as I remember them all. At Junior School at morning recess when we had our small bottles of milk we used to say....

Thank you for the world so sweet
Thank you for the food we eat
Thank you for the birds that sing
Thank you God for everything

Wouldn't be allowed in school these days I imagine.
