when i attended lozells girls school we used to use cherry orchard playing fields off wood lane.....i was in the area recently and tried to track it down...must be all of 43 years ago...pretty sure i found it...just wondered if any other members went there....in those days there was just a long wooden hut for changing into our pe kit....and thats where i took a nasty wack off a hockey stick...i saw the stars that day...lol

Thats the playing field that Handsworth Tech. used as well, uesd to walk there from school and go home from there

morning mike...can you confirm this pic then....the new block is now on the same spot as the old wooden hut as i remember....

lyn

this is the little lane just to the side of the fields...a lot of the area now has new houses built on it but its nice to see this was left untouched....

hiya Lyn
I remember that wooden hut it had little tiny windows ..we only ever played hockey there

thats it maggie...little windows....like i said thats where i took that wack from a hockey stick...never been the same since...lol...

am i right in thinking that we had a school bus to take us there...

lyn

Yes your right ..i used to love the houses in that road so different to where i lived at the time

same here maggie.....o god..ive just remember the pumps....quite a whiff to them ....lol....

I used to play hockey at a playing fields out that way - I wonder if it was the same one. I known that Dennisons Watch Case factory also used the fields. I used to catch the bus at Hampstead Road to take me that way past. I have a photo of our hockey team, if I find it and put it on, perhaps someone can tell me if it was at Cherry Orchard Playing Fields.

I have just found the photo (I think I may have posted it before on another thread). There is not as much of the hut to see as I thought, but someone might just recognise it and tell me if it was Cherry Orchard or not. I am third from left on the back row.

Judy

judy thats a cracking photo...i just cant remember the crazy paving or the other building next to the hut...i take it that is the hut on the left...it seems to have smallish windows like me an maggie remember but..i just cant be certain....oh this is so annoying...lol

lyn

Yes Lyn, it is annoying. I am mad with myself that I can't remember. It must have been either Cherry Orchard or Perry Hall playing fields, but looking at my old A-Z, Cherry Orchard is the nearer, as I imagine the bus route I took would have been Hampstead Road, then Handsworth Wood Road. It is frustrating not being able to remember. I am seeing my sister tomorrow, and she might remember, but I'm not sure if she played games there or not.

Judy

judy it will be nice to see what she remembers...theres a few of us who used that playing fields by the looks of it....hey what about a meet up there....??? we could take a picnic...lol...only joking....

lyn

judy would you mind if i asked if anyone could lighten up your pic..may get a clearer look at it...

lyn

That would be great Lyn, thanks. By the way I have just looked at my old Bus Guide, and see that the No.16 from Hampstead Road passed Cherry Orchard Road, so I am beginning to think that the photo would have been taken at Cherry Orchard playing fields.

Judy

sounds good enough to me judy...ok lets see if we can get a better look at the left side of the pic....

I am sure that when I was attending Anglesey Street School we used what we called Wood Lane playing fields. This would have been in the 1970's. I seem to remember a wooden pavillion type building but cannot be 100% sure. I am sure though that this is what you are referring to a Cherry Orchard Playing Fields as when I used to visit my Aunt's house in Lloyd Road, we used to walk the dog at a park which was at the bottom of Lloyd Road, off Cherry Orchard Road. The green ended at the back of the pub which I cannot think of it's name. (it will come to me). If you then crossed over the main road I am sure you were then in what I used to call Wood Lane playing fields.

hi jules...i am posative you are correct...some called it wood lane playing fields as it was off wood lane...i would say they are one and the same....

lyn

Hi Lyn, I've just got back from seeing my sister, but unfortunately she can't help in confirming whether the photo was taken at Cherry Orchard. She is younger than me, and thinks the school might have changed their playing fields and the one she used was further out. So, I am still uncertain as to where the photo was taken, but the area is right.

Judy

ok judy....we shall put it on the back burner then...lol...it probably was cherry orchard as it seems a lot of schools used it....

ps plus our memories are not what they used to be...well mine isnt anyway....

I went to Handsworth Tech in 1950 and spent many a pleasant 'sports afternoon' at those fields. Can't remember how we got from the school to the fields, probably on the No 11 bus. We used to take it easy while the teachers had a cigarette break ! Some of us used to walk home across Perry Hall park.

I was looking at the Digital Handsworth site and found lovely old pics of Perry Hall park, but I also saw an aerial photo of the playing fields taken about 1955. The roads are named. The fields layout is just as I remembered. Didn't post the pic because of copyright terms etc.

Thanks for mentioning the Digital Handsworth side, Old Mohawk, I just had a look at the aerial photo Old Mohawk. I remember most of those roads around Handsworth Park. I hadn't seen that view before.

Judy

I expect the playing fields area was once part of this farm. It's claimed to date back to the 14th century. Viv.
