Census Occupation. Minds Home??

Brummie babby
Whilst looking up a relative on the 1911 Census, Dor(r)is Verina Speak(e) of 48 St Stephens Road, Selly Park, it says that her occupation was 'Minds Home'.

Anyone with any ideas as to what this work was? Just wondered if it was saying where she worked as in a mental home.

Really stuck on this and would appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks for the suggestion. I really must look more carefully... as in Minding the Home. I assumed it as being an occupation name rather than a statement of what she did in the home.

Still open minded so any more suggestions gratefully received.

Martin

I think I'm digging a deep hole for myself with the feminist brigade assuming that minding a home isn't an occupation!!

Treat me gently ladies!

Martin believe me it is an occupation:sweat: but we will let you off this time....:D:D:D

I suspect it is taking care of the home. Mental care was still in "Lunatic Asylums" in those days.
Sometimes if a couple live in / over a shop, the wife and even children are listed as 'Helping with the business'.

In your case, as the Father is a widower, elder daughter is at work and two younger brothers are still at school, Doris is the only one left to take care of the family home. She "Minds Home" for the family.

I'm inclined to agree that she would have been minding the house rather than mental health caring.
But I agree with Wendy, it definitely is an occupation, so you could be digging yourself a big hole - but will assume it was a tongue in cheek statement lol lol

I too think it means minding the home - definitely an occupation! :) I know that Doris was not the wife but just out of interest does anyone know when the term housewife started to be used?

I googled Minds Home as this was one of the answers given - perhaps thats why Nobby thought they worked at a mental institution.
