Catholic Chaple Coughton Court/Throckmortons

Helen G

Almost a Brummie
My Catholic branch lived in and around Coughton; Great Alne, Spernal, Coughton and Studley. Surnames include, Stewart, Washbrook/Washbourne and Smith. Dates identified so far 1760ish -1911. They were all agricultural labourers and may have worked for the Throckmorton family. Some of them paid rent to the Throckmorton estate!!

I have collected information from the microfilm of the parish records of the Catholic Chapel, Coughton held at the Record Office in Warwick and also visited Coughton Court to see the room in side which housed the original chapel and also the chapel in the grounds.

What I would like to do now is to get a greater understanding of the history of Catholicism of that time and how the restriction placed on catholics at that time affected their lives.

Can anyone suggest a good book/internet site/ places to visit?
Mnay thanks for reading this
