I have four suitcases packed full of the old radio cassettes, many of which were purchased as the old 8 track tapes became obsolete. I have an advert for a small walkman type machine with a USB lead for transferring the cassette onto CD. This player is advertised at £29.99. Does anyone know if they are any good??

Hi Stitcher,

The Ion Tape Express, you mean? I bought one whilst in the UK - 25 pounds from PC World - and it seems to do the job fine. Amazon sell them too. It actually creates an mp3 file from which you can assemble and burn your own CD or just play the file on your computer. There's plenty of software on the web to tidy up any hisses or crackles afterwards too! :friendly_wink:

Thank you so much for that reply sospiri, the reason I asked was because it seems awfully cheap in this day and age. I will purchase one forthwith and start coppying all those I wish to keep, then I will give the original cassettes to The Diskery because they have a large bin of used cassettes for sale. Thanks again.

On a similar theme, a few weeks ago Lidl had a gadget for transferring video tapes to DVD via computer. £19.99 I think they were. Anyone had any experience of these? They're bound to come up again in Lidl.

Hi Seabird,

Sadly, apart from Photo paper (Agfa) and on one occasion an HP all-in-one printer/scanner, our Lidls here in Crete don't seem to have the computer offers that you guys in the UK get. :upset:

Hi Stitcher! I bought a "Zennox" tape to digital converter for a similar price to that of Sospiri. The "Zennox" works simply and effectively. I bought mine following an advert in the "Daily Telegraph" about twelve months ago. Would expect it to still be around. Try the after sales service at Clifford James, Gladden Place, West Gillibrands Industrial Estate, Skelmersdale, Lancs. WN8 9SX Telephone No. 0871 911 7003. Hope you get success. Regards willey

Thanks for that Willey, I am going to P.C. World tomorrow but if that trip is not successful I will follow your lead.
Thanks aagain, stitcher

Once again, thank you for the information Jean, I have made arrangements with a friend who is a computrer whizz-kid to check out whats available on freeware, then he is coming with me to Maplin and PC World and I will have whichever he advises.

I have today purchased an ION Tape to go from Maplins. It was the only one I could locate, P.C. World and their like have not had any for awhile now so I grabbed this one. I am using the sound enhancer from Wavepad suggested by sospiri and I will try it all out over the next few days.

Hi Stitcher,

Good luck with this, though it is NOT rocket science! The only thing the software insists is that you download it into iTunes - again a simple free download. But it doesn't mean that you have to play the resulting file through iTunes, it you prefer to play it through WinAmp, Irfanview or whatever, or burn the files to a disk. They probably get a backhander from Apple for plugging iTunes. Have fun!

Thans for that sospiri, I must get on with several things really because I am 72 next month and have a heart condition that requires regular check-ups. I have boxes of pictures, papers and books about Old Birmingham that I am sorting out and disposing of along with about three hundred music cassettes to sort through and discard or transfer tio CD. I am getting everything in order to save my wife and son the trouble, my wife has sorted hers out. While I am doing this I am constantly going back to my sewing because the one I am doing at the moment is very time consuming and a patch of fifty stitches can have twenty or so different colours which means constant and regular cotton changes. The Cardiologist tells me that the heart problem can be rectified with surgery but they will not do it until my condition deteriorats somewhat. I shower every day and my life insurance is up to date. Please do not misunderstand me, I do not expect to die any time soon but I will feel happier if prevent my wife and son from haveing to all this in a few years time.
Thanks for your help with the sound thingie and Sheila and myself wish you and yours a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year.

Well I have a three year start on you, Stitcher, 75 next month. Had an angioplasty done just over 3 years ago and just spent the last two days in hospital with gastro enteritis! So similar conditions.

I have albums of old photos to scan - mainly family - but I'm darned if I know the names of some of them. After a bit they all look alike! Still, onwards & upwards and hopefully I won't leave too many loose ends when I go - not that I'm planning to go just yet - they'll have to drag me kicking and screaming!

Hope you and yours have a good one, Stitcher.

sospiri, Seabird, willey and bramwell, a big thank you to all of you for the help. I have just downloaded the first cassette onto the computer and the sound is fantastic due to the equipment I aquired on your advice. In my opinion it sounds better than the cassette did when it was new and it will now be easy to burn it onto a cd. I have just had a quick check and I have about 450 cassettes to go through. The music goes from orchestral, Greek and Hawian right through to Country. My tastes have changed somewhat so I will play bits of them as I sort through them, discarding or saving as I go. Then will come the task of downloading all those I want to keep, thanks again for the help.

Hi Stitcher,

Glad to hear that everything went well, as I expected it would do. I quite like the ION gadget and it does as it says on the tin! Enjoy!

Hello sospiri, I have made a start and completed one C.D. but look what I found in one of the carrying cases the tapes are in.

Thats the inside.

And this is the outside. It is the case insert from a cassette which I shall be converting soon.

Stitcher, I have watched your posts with great interest as we also have about 4 cases of tapes, some of which are no longer available. I think I will also get one of your devices and download them, using the software that Sospiri advises.
thanks for the helpful feedbac,
Sue

Hi Stitcher,

What a find! You've obviously been digging deep there. :playful:

Somewhere I have a similar box, many cassettes minus cases & labels, saved when clearing out my various old bangers of the past. I know I have several Dudley Moore Trio albums that are no longer available, so I really must make a start on digitising this stuff. Have fun!

Maurice

sistersue61, you can be first, the only place I could get the cassette thingy was at Maplins and it was £29.95. It is quite easy to use although a little time consuming. Have fun when you start.
sospiri, now it's your turn, I am currently looking through the cassettes because I will not be converting all of them although I have done two. Thanks again for your help and advice.

sospiri, just to let you know how I am getting on with the wave pad whatsit. I tried transfering a couple of tapes and then had a change of plan. I have now sorted through all the cassettes and gave away all those I really did not want, 380 of the dam things. I listened to short bits of all the tracks to satisfy myself about getting rid of them. I now have another 190 which I shall transfer, then delete some of the tracks so leaving only the tracks I want to keep. Thanks again for you help and advice.

Hi Stitcher,

Wise move! I shall be very selective about what I transfer. I originally bought the ION to tranfer a tape of a broadcast I did for the BBC West of England Home Service in 1965. Back in those days they wouldn't give us a copy of the recording so a friend did a 15 ips reel-to-reel tape from the FM broadcast. Subsequently that got transferred to cassette and there it has stayed for all these years!

Then there's stuff like the Dudley Moore Trio, most of which has been wiped from the record company catalogues now so is irreplaceable. I won't bother taking over any of the classical stuff because there are better modern recordings available now.

My son is doing a similar exercise digitising all my late father-in-law's colour slides and he took hundreds of pictures. There are lots of sunsets, which can be discarded, but the family stuff and Salvation Army pictures are well worth saving.

Sospiri, have you noticed how much more time you spend doing things as you get older?? I can not understand how I ever found time to work 50 hours a week, do all the gardening, decorating, driving the wife to the shops and back, plus working part time on pub doors in the Brum Beat days.

Stitcher:

A friend and I were discussing this only yesterday. He kept on putting off retirement until last May on the grounds that his other half would be sick of him hanging around the house all day. I told him at the time that he would wonder how he ever found time to work when he retired and he threw that back at me yesterday saying "You were right". I have a theory that the earth spins faster as you get older!

I've lived on Crete now for seven years and it has absolutely flown by. Time flies when you're having fun, so they say, and in a week's time I will be 75. I'm sure there is something to be said for those people lucky enough to be able to retire early. I actually did, but only by six weeks!

Hello again sospiri, I used to make a lot of my wifes evening waer for when we went out,I also made a couple of suits and dress shirts for myself, and some of my sons clothes when he was a nipper. I was always in full time employment and did a part time job on doors etc. I used to do all the decorating and I still do all the gardening. We had days out at Weston, Skegness, Dudley Zoo and all the other regular places. Nowadays, by the time I have had lunch and got my gardening boots on it is time to call it a day and come back inside again.
Now, re. the sound wave whatsit, I am listening to a cassette via the headphones and when a track comes on that I like I copy it into an itunes library with the title and singer. Then I can make a number of C.Ds. full of what I want rather than just copying the cassette in total.

It sounds like you've had a very busy life, Stitcher. Unless you have the major part of it turned into lawn, gardening can be a full-time job on its own! Lawn is not really an option in Crete, it is just too dry - unless you want a sky high water bill! I planted a dozen or so fruit trees, and all the native trees - oranges, lemons, a lime, and a pomegranate survived - but peach, the apricot and one of the cherries fell by the wayside. Of the vegetables, only the Greek white onions did really well. Tomatoes so-so, potatoes & peppers didn't do well at all.

Dudley Zoo was a regular outing when I was a kid. We did go to Weston once, but it was wet and windy. Our usual resorts were Weymouth, Barmouth or Rhyl.

Most albums have two or three good numbers and the rest are make-weight padding! My hobbies are now very much more sedate - photography, genealogy, and listening to music. Digging the garden is not on - almost heavy clay in the winter and like concrete in the summer - so one of my local Greek friends puts his tractor over it around May and the strimmer takes care of the weeds!
