Great minds think alike Lyn. I was going to post this pic. My friend from Lozells School took over the shop from her Grandparents in the early 70s i think. It would be nice to find out if those in the pic were any relation to her. If she is still on friends reunited i will see if i can ask her.

Hi. My husband's father bought this shop in 1968 from Mr and Mrs Trow. That's where I met my husband. We were both 16. We are both now 65 and still together. I bought the shop from his father in 1970 and used an Urban Renewal grant to replace the windows, add a bathroom and rendering to the outside. I sold it 2 years before the riots. I originally lived in Carpenter's Road.

oh wow jean thats great fancy that and welcome to the forum...there is only a years difference in our ages...i lived in villa st from 58 until 72...just wondering which senior school you attended

The photo below shows an oil delivery man outside a shop in Carpenter's Road, Lozells. At that time there were three shops (grocers) listed in that street, at 58, 81 and 102. Al,l three seem to be of standard I unit width, but 81 and 102 both have a wide entry to the right of them, which the shop in the photo does not. Therefore I believe that the shop must be no 58 Carpenter's Road, occupied then by William Groves, Grocer.

hi mike fladbury place is still there at least the entrance to it is...so would this st view fit the photo...only reason i ask is because the shop seems much wider than the house at no 58 and the door of 58 seems to be on in the entrance to fladbury place..

I see what you mean Lyn. Also, the house next door doesn't look at all like the photo. Certainly the other two options are out. I would guess that the attribution to Carpernter's st is probably wrong.

all sorted i think....i should have taken more notice of the photo on post 1 which i posted  ...the horse and driver are the same as in mikes photo post 9...if we look closely at mikes photo you can just see the letters UNT on the left giving the name of H HUNT and on my photo it does say carpenters road above the shop window on the right...having said all this i am pretty sure mikes photo has been posted somewhere on the forum some time ago...but at least we know the location is correct and maybe someone could look up H HUNT to see what number carpenters road it was...

Very helpful. In commercial section of 1905 Kelly's the entry reads

Hunt Henry coal dealer, Carpenter Road, Lozells.

The street directory lists
Here is Wills Street
Hunt H
Then 56 no number given

wonder if anyone can make out the name of the oil company...its on the tank above where it says oil company...thanks

Not sure if they delivered oil but wondered if it was EVESON listed as another coal and coke merchant?

It appears to be an unusual contraption, Lyn. A horse drawn vehicle but appearing to look like a steam propelled vehicle - complete with steam dome and chimney. No name that I can see.
Onr for the experts I guess, not for me as I am going to have a siesta right now.;)

Yes I agree too. Did the same as Mike - a definite EVE... there. A very old established company, still going in 1942, Everson Coal Co Ltd was at Hillfield Hall Solihull by this time. Here are some of its early depots.

H Hunt, also is listed in Kelly's as having a coal business at 103 Wills St, which connects to the shop in Carpenters Rd, so they had the whole corner.

I was thinking Eveson's must have been the suppliers to Hunts. Perhaps the vehicle was one used to transport coal etc from either the wharves or railway stations. Could the vehicle be pulling something ie a receptical for coal ? Or was it a good advertisement for its products in action ? Was it a road locomotive ? Or a steam car advertising Evesons? Interesting that it has #3 on the side. Were there other similar vehicles ?

viv i was wondering if the vehicle could have been delivering some sort of heating oil..maybe not for selling from the shop but for their own private use...just an idea
