This is a photo I have had for a while and would love to find out more. The only info I have is from a book written by Edward Manning the Chaplain of Key Hill. He died in 1952 after working for 53 years at the cemetery. Sorry I didn't note the inscription.

Captain Fredrick James Ranie served in the 58th and 95th regiments. He was the Barrack Master in Birmingham for 18 years. He died on August 23rd 1859 aged 60.

Thanks for your time.:)

the old 95th was I think the rifles "Sharps War" (later the Royal Green Jackets) 58th was the (Rutlandshire Regt) I am sure until about 1888 then disapeared.

1849 Whites directory
Ranie Capt. Frederick James, barrack master &store keeper ordnance, small arms department. Camden hill
1855 Whites
Ranie Capt. Fdk, barrack master, Legge Lane
1855 Whites
Ranie Capt Fredk James barrack master. Legge Lane, Camden Hill

In 1862 the Misses Emily & Susan Ranie were at 8 Legge Lane , presumably the same house. Presumably emily is the Emily Earle of 1841 (child of wife's earlier marriage /or not). Can't find the house, or them, on the 1861 census. There does not appear to have been any renumbering, and I estimate the position of no 8 was around the red cross on the 1890 map. It seems as if the house had gone by then .
In the 1841 census Fredk is Barrack head with wife Emily (30) and Harriet (10) & Emily (5) Earle(?) in what looks like smith row, which is just before charlotte St. on the enumerators route.. The 1841 Pigots directory however lists him as barrack master at Great Brook St.
The 1851 census lists him with his wife Emily and a servant.
He is born in Woolwich and Emily, his wife, in Newport Isle of wight.

Mike yet again some fantastic information this just opens up what I already have. Thank you so much I will copy all the info and add it to my files. This Archive is growing by the day......wonderful:).

thats interesting him born in woolwich, as the rifles after 1818 tended to be based with the Royal Horse Artillery hence Woolwich home of the Artillery

Yes I did apprecirate the possible connection with the army at woolwich. Visited the museum there a few years ago. very interesting
