Seeing the railings in the pics with the Minerva pub, brings back some memories. They formed the edge of all the car parks at Cannings

You can see the railings were made from RS channel uprights and lengths of scaffolding tube. In that view by the Minerva, at the near end a sliding version of the tube could be locked off to make the car park secure. That would be done just about 9:00 am after everybody had clocked in. It was mainly office wallahs in this one. There was another sliding pole at the other end that would be opened at home time. Some might argue that there was no point locking it all off, after all there were mainly old crocs in there, not many could afford new motors.

Folks who parked there were always very civil to each other, and it was an un-written rule, that once in there you couldn't get out until home time. You would drive in from the Minerva end and nose right up behind the vehicle that got there before you. Cars would be about 3 deep.

One morning Ron D. in the Eng Drawing Office got in a bit late, and was the last in the car park. He had an old Mini and was only just able to squeeze in at the Minerva end. During the day some wag got up to mischief.
Minis were easy to get into then so after the wag managed to unlock the sliding security pole, Rons mini was rolled back about 6 feet so that the back end was stickng out across the pavement. This was just by that door to the Minerva vaults. Then with the windows of the car slid open on both sides, the car park security pole was slid back into place and the lock attached. The pole went straight through Rons Mini, in one side and out the other, through the open windows.
Lots of people gathered outside at 5:20 for a good belly laugh.
