My grandfather James Caldecott who I never knew, had a butchers shop in Rookery Road Handsworth around the 1940's I think. I would be grateful for a look up to see when he was there. Thanks in antisipation. Moma P

Thank you so much John for the information. My grandfather died in 1948 and my uncles carried on the buisness but not for very long. I don't know what happened but now I have something to go on. I have a photo of what I think was the shop although I am not sure if its the shop in Rookery Road as he also had a shop in West Bromwich.

Re: Caldecott's in Birmingham

Hello Wendy,
I have just joined the forum. I found it whilst trying to find details on the CALDECOTT family in the Birmingham area.

I am trying to research Louisa Maud CALDECOTT (my wife's Grandmother). My Father in law gave me some details of her family and sibling names. (William & Lizzie). And some other details.

Although I cannot find her in any census I believe she is the daughter of Harry CALDECOTT & Mary Ann BRUTON. And in turn I believe Harry (called Charles Henry in one census) is the son of Henry Caldecott & Mary Ann BEHEAN.

If you have any details of the CALDECOTT family I would love to hear from you.

Regards

Kerry

Re: Caldecott's in Birmingham

Hello Kerry. I don't recognise any of the names you have although that doesn't mean there isn't a connection. The family seem to mainly originate from Chester. My great grandfather was Robert Caldecott born Erbistock Wales in 1834. I have found a Louisa Maud but much earlier than your wife's grandmother, this is interesting as often names were repeated in families. If you could give me some approximate dates I will see what I can find.

Re: Caldecott's in Birmingham

Thank you for your offer of help. There is a lot of guess work and implications from census details.
Louisa Maud was born in the 1890's. The only BMD reference I could find was Q June 1892. My Father in law remembers an Uncle William and Aunt Lizzie and that his father had married twice. From these pieces of information I have tracked only one match.
William CALDICOTT b Q Mar 1899 & Elizabeth (Lizzie) b Q Mar 1890.

Census cross referencing shows a Harry CALDECOTT who married a Mary Ann BRUTON. Births and deaths seem to tie in. Harry's first wife died and I believe he married Louisa ELLIS. Louisa was also a widow and had been married to George STOKES. Louisa had 3 children through her first marriage. Through the children's names I found Harry named Charles Henry with the spelling CALDECOTT in the 1901 census. The surname spelling does seem to jump about.

Back tracking further I believe Harry is the son of Henry CALDECOTT & Mary Ann Behan, and Mary Ann Bruton is the daughter of Henry BRUTON and Mary Ann HUNDY. Yes I know that all the forenames are the same, but these have beed cross-referenced with census details back to 1841 and the names appear to be right.

If my research is right
Henry the father was born Q Dec 1869 marr. Q Dec 1890
Henry the Grandfather was born abt 1844 (warwickshire) and marr. Q Sept 1868 West Brom

Henry the Grandfather's children being:
Ada b 1868 and married Benjamin BRIDGEWATER (died relatively young)
Arthur b abt 1872
Maud b abt 1874
Charles b 1876
Alexander b 1878 marr. Laura Evelyn BRAZIER
William b 1882
Bertram b 1885

I hope this will help.

Re: Caldecott's in Birmingham

Kerry sometimes the family name changes from Caldecott to Caldicott. I have gone through my family tree and sadly have not found a connection. Do you know where your family originated? There were a few from the Worcestershire area but not connected to my family. I hope you have more luck with your search. Wendy.

Just an update. We have uncovered a birth certificate. It looks as though I had got the wrong Mary as wife of Harry.
Harry married Mary HANCOX b abt 1865 in Birmingham.
