Hi everyone, I am new to this site and love to hear all the old stories. Am trying to track down any photos of my dad's shop in gooch street. He was John Webber. The shop was on the same side as Trippas the cake shop and plats a hardware shop, also woolworths. My dad's shop was by the lights and on the opposite side there was a jewellers called Roses. On the opposite corner was Muddimans the greengrocers. He was there for a good number of years including the war years and probably last traded in the early 60's Any photograph:) would mean a lot to me. I remember woolworths and its creaky boards and also my dad's shop had sawdust on the floor. He ran the shop with my mom, Gert and also my sister Nora. Sadly my sister Nora who also married a butcher called Johnny Wild died a couple of years ago and also her husband. My gran lived off St. Mary's Row somewhere, not sure of the exact location, but I loved her little back to back with its homemade rag rugs. I myself worked in the shop very occasionly (Jackie) and I remember how very cold it was.

Thanks Rustie

Hi Rustie

I have located your dads shop John Webber Cornish Butcher 334 Gooch St in 1950 he was located in the middle of a shoe repair shop and a chemist shop close to the junction of Belgrave Rd.

The shop would have been demolished in the late 60's early 70's to make way for the Central Mosque.

(whats the difference between a Cornish Butcher and an ordinary butcher).

Hi Phil,

Thanks for information on my dad's shop. I knew the location, but didn't know what shops were either side or the number of his shop so this has been very helpful. My mom worked with my dad and she died in 1964 after they had recently given up the shop so it would have been somewhere in the 1960's. In answer to your question re. Cornish. My dad's name was John Cornish Webber, not cornish butcher. Apparently quite an unusual name. Many thanks for all your help. I still live in hopes of finding a photo and this further information you have given me should help.
Thanks again Rustie

Many apologies about the name, only the way it is listed in Kelly's Directory I'm not sure they understood it was his name either.
