Butcher’s Arms Snow Hill

Any traces of this place will have gone long ago, but good to have a record of it. Maybe it was still there when Snow Hill Station was built ? Or maybe it didn’t even survive Victorian redevelopment.

Presumably Edward Giles was the landlord. This is confirmed by a notice from 1756.



Possibly the same one who died in the Jolly Sailor in church Xt in 1764



It might be a coincidence, but the reason for the name of the pub may be Eric Giles' other occupation

Tried to find position and unsuccessfull, but it is of interest that in 1770 there were publicans listed (no names of pubs given) at 12,23,33,42,48,6,70,77,88 and 90 snow Hill

Further investigation found this reference



The 1777 directory showed Samuel Savigar at no 48 Snow Hill
The pub was still there in 1798

But by 1823 in directories it was Josiah Jackson, grocer.
I wonder if the reason for the carrier moving his delivery/pick up point in 1798 was because the building ceased to be a pub

A nice aerial view from 1948 which appears to show No. 48, there looks like an entry on the rhs as shown on the map. I'm not saying that this was the original No. 48 but the building certainly has some age to it.

Love these old maps and trying to picture what it was like. Those courts were probably very grim and the pubs did good trade (probably mainly men no doubt!).
