This is a bit long winded but here goes:-
I have the birth cert for my gt gt grandmother Ellen Burman B oct 1849, on there her parents are George Burman and Elizabeth Burman formerly WOOD. I was wondering if on birth certs where it says maiden name of mother, they had to put actuall maiden name or previous married name. My problem being i cannot find a marriage of George Burman and Elizabeth wood, i can find one of a George Burman and Elizabeth wright in aston in 1845, which would tie up. So I thought maybe Elizabeth had been married before. She originally came from Wolverhampton, so i looked for a marriage of an Elizabeth wood and somebody wright and i found one in West Brom in 1840 again the dates would tie up. So getting back to my question could she have used her actuall maiden name on daughters birth cert and not her previous married name.
My other problem is that i can find a birth of George Burman in 1821 on igi st Phillips birmingham, but on later census returns there is a george burman and elizabeth listed but their ages are wrong, so i am confused as to wether i have right george burman..
On 1861 census Ellen Burman daughter is listed as living at adam street birmingham as a nurse even though only 12 yrs old, George and elizabeth are listed in same street but different address.

Hope this isnt to complicated

any ideas PLEASSSSSEEEEE

Re: Can anyone help me solve this....brick wall is hurting my head now.

In a word, yes. The maiden name is just that, the name she bore before marriage, in this case her first marriage.

As to the 12 year old nurse. That is feasible as a girl looking after someones child would be listed as a nurse, just as a woman breast feeding another's child, would be listed as a "wet nurse".

 I also agree with what barrie says Jay O0. Also ages on census' were not always correct, as often people until 1837 registers were introduced (and even then they are not always right) were not sure when they were born and in 1841 census ages were rounded up and down anyway: 3 years could = 5 years and 16/17 years =15 years of age where as 18/19 years could be put up to 20 years.

Hope this helps O0

Re: Can anyone help me solve this....brick wall is hurting my head now.

May need some help again....a follow on from my original message :-\.

I know have the marriage cert for George Burman and Elizabeth Wright and it is confirmed her maiden name was wood because her fathers name is Joseph Wood, and she is a widow on the cert O0. Now then this gives me yet another dilemma because George is down as a widower :-\ which has stumped me completly because i thought i had found his birth on IGI at St Phillips Bham in 1821 C. in 1823 fathers name on there is John. Then the cert arrived (Marriage) his fathers name is William. So i cant find his birth....problem one. Problem two......I have found census records for 1861 and 1871 of a George Burman and Elizabeth Burman thats no problem, from that theire dates of birth are 1803 and 1808 respectively. The only birth i can find for a George Burman for around that age is in Snitterfield Warks, but unfortunately IGI doesnt go bak that far to give me his fathers name. on Census it says Elizabeth was born in Wolverhampton which would fit in with the info i gave on first message. But i cant find them at all on 1851 census...any ideas?
My last problem is that if i have the right george he died in 1881 before census. Elizabeth is living with her daughter and son in law...but listed as JANE BERMAN not Elizabeth but age is about right.
Can anybody suggest any ways to unravel this.

Hopefully
Jay. :idiot2:
