Has anyone any ideas as to how the surname BURMAN may be mistranscribed.

I have a George Burman B 1802/3 Snitterfield Warks...found him on 1861 and 1871 census with his wife Elizabeth, he died in 1881.
Cant find any trace of him in 1841 or 1851 so name must be mistranscribed somewhere but i cant figure out how it would be spelt.

He married Elizabeth in 1845, but had been married before dont know who to though, they were living in birmingham Duddeston at time of marriage and after.

Jay it could well be from Dutch or Flemish origin. The name Buurman (sounds like Burman in English) is not an uncommon name in the lowlands and translated means 'neighbour'. In 1802 it may have been noted as Burman and then put right by 1841 as Buurman, this is all I can think of. https://www.linkedin.com/pub/0/538/113

Hi Jay

May I offer a suggestion for the mistranscription from researching my own surnames medieaval source.
Berryman, Berriman and other surnames sounding the same is a name derived from old English (Saxon) from the occupation of Buri, or "head servant of the big household." (also a minor norse god)
If you were the Buri man for the "big Household" you would probably be few and far between and if Berryman is a mistranscription/derivative of Buriman, then your surname appears to be a lot closer to the origional than mine!
Hope this helps if you can't find evidence of any continental link.

Regards
Phil Berryman.

Just as an aside, whenever I want a list of possible variations in a surname, I generally type just the surname into the IGI and see what variations come up. Just for the record, I got 17 different spellings of SHEPPARD and 24 different spellings of PIERPOINT! :D

I'm not volunteering to do BURMAN, but amongst the many mistranscriptions of DORMAN (a similar name) I've found DAWMAN, DURMAN, DOLMAN, DOLLMAN, and a host of others.

Did you get any joy in tracing George Burman? He's a direct ancestor of mine, and has proved equally elusive to me. LDS has the following:

BUT, there's no trace of George and Dorothy's marriage. I have LDS records for Job's father and grandfather (also Jobs), but they vanish again.

The name Burman can be spelled Berman(n) and is often a Jewish surname with either spelling. If our Burmans had Jewish roots, they may have been crypto-Jews and would have originated in Eastern Europe - possibly Poland or Hungary.

I am desperate to know if you have any information on this line - and am very willing to share my Gedcom with you also. How are you related?

There were Bermans who migrated from Poland at the begining of the 20th century. One Burman changed his name from Berkman to Berman
