Burials at St Martin's ??????

skylark

Proud to be a Brummie !!
Hello folks, I have relatives who were buried at St Martin's in 1834 & 1847. I know that the St Martin's church where these burials took place was demolished & the church that is now standing replaced it. My question relates to exactly WHAT happened to the old graves??? Would the occupants of the old graves been interred elswhere ? If so where & can I find this information ???

Thanks,
Margaret.

The graves at St martins were moved in various years - when I was researchng this I found that some were moved into family vaults. Some were moved to Witton and some remains that could not be identified were moved to Quinton.
:)

Also - I have just remembered that after 1810 some burials were at Park Street - a detatched overflow cemetery for St Martins - although these burials were still recorded as being in St Martins.
Ths overflow cemetery was grassed over and became Park Street Gardens which opened to the public in 1880.

Thank you both for your help. I doubt that my relations were rich enough to have a family vault...but that does bring up another question...would there have been paupers graves at St Martin's? certainly my relatives had all their children baptised at St Martin's as it was their local church.

Margaret.
