Ex-lurker
On the phone to my old mom today. She's taken to telling me awful jokes lately. This time she announced it with: "Bumper Fun Book, 1927". This was an old saying in the family whenever someone told a terrible, Christmas cracker-style joke.
How that took me back! Our nan and grandad had this (Bumper Fun) book which we kids used to plague them to fetch out. As well as jokes, it had games, puzzles, tricks, e.g. making things like palm trees out of rolled-up newspaper. A lot of things involve pipe-cleaners, I seem to recall.
A fair amount of googling later, I find that the publishers, William Foulsham (www.foulsham.com), are still going (estd 1819)! Sadly they don't list the BFB nowadays.
I found a 1976 version on Italian ebay (huh?) and another one in a booksellers website, but that one didn't have "Bumper" in the title.
Does anyone here have memories of this literary treasure?
