Bruno Schulze Pershore Street German Sausage Skin Maker

sez

master brummie
I was wondering if anyone had any information about my great-great grandad who moved here from Germany and set up a sausage skin making business at 60 Pershore Street.

My great-great grandad was Bruno Schulze and he remained here until 1914 when he emigrated to America, but some of the family remained, including his daughter Emma Smith (nee Schulze) who married Henry Edward Smith and her sister Marie Schulze and brother Frederick Schulze (who took over the business).

If anyone has any information please let me know.

There seems to be some mystery over Henry and Emma (my great grandparents) who slipt up some time between 1911 and 1939- not sure why. Also when Frederick Schulze took over the business, we believe he married Marie (all we know is that she was American) and when she died the business and family posessions were in her name and were either auctioned off at her house in Uplands Road, Selly Oak and any money was given to unknown people in America.

The electoral roll lists those living (or owning business ) at 60 Pershore St as;
1920 Henry Edward & Emma Smith
1922 Frederic J and Marie Schultze and Emma Smith
1925 Frederick and Marie Schultze
1930 Frederick and Marie Schultze
(Also listed at “near Trent St – a lockup or allotment?)
1935 and 1939 Frederick and Marie Schultze
1945, 1950 Frederick and Marie Schultze 1950
Kellys lists Fred as living at 60 Pershore St (in addition to the business there ) from 1933-1950. this doesn’t mean he wasn’t living there in other years, but either he wasn’t listed (1932) of I do not have directory for that year (1951). In 1955 it is not listed as his private address, though the firm is still there.
I’m not sure how this fits with the information in your original post. Perhaps it means something to you

Thanks for that Mike.

There are several people listed at 60 Pershore Street, but we know at some point they went on to have their own private addresses so I am a little confused as to whether it was more a factory or something rather than a main home, I don't have any information or pictures as to what the building was like, although the census of 1911 has Henry, Emma, Fred, Marie and children living there. Bruno who was the main owner is not mentioned as living there, at least from the information we have.

The dates and names help as we try to figure out who was where when so thanks again.

In 1911 Bruno Schulze B1852 germany, sausage skin manufacturer is living with his wife Justine? (has been recorded as Tustine) B1859 Stade, Germany at Croft Road, Holsworthy, Devonshire.
Married 33 years, 8 children born, 4 have died, 4 still living.

Suzanne

Thanks Suzanne.

I knew the family was in Devon at some point, but the address helps us narrow it down. Bruno's wife was Justine. Also I was unaware they had 8 children- the 4 living and the only ones I know of were:
Emma, Marie, Frederick and Arthur.

I also know Bruno and Justine emigrated to America in 1914.

Thanks again for the info.

I dont know if you have it, but here is the original image from the passenger list. It is not very clear so I have drawn a box round your interest.

Terry

Thank you, I have not seen the original passenger list before and it gives us a bit more information. I am also going to look at the Ellis Island website for them and their children who we know visited frequently.
