British Subject?

Joanna

master brummie
I have been looking up a William Harrison.

On the 1851 census his place of birth says "British Subject"

On the 1861 census it says "on the bay of priscay"

1871 census "Biscay"

What does this mean? Will I be able to find anymore about him or does it stop here?

William's family were either military, army or maybe worked for 'The East India C0' and William sounds like he was born on land or aboard a ship in 'The Bay of Biscay'. The Biscay Gulf is on the borders of Western France and Spain (I think).
You need to find out what his parents were doing there at the time of his birth.

Thanks for that.

I can't find any details of his parents as yet. His marriage details on IGI say he was born in Brailes, Warwickshire - which is where he married his wife and where she was from.

Hello Joanna, there is a record for every British subject. The consuls made returns to London of Births Marriages and Deaths. I can't recall how the records are archived. I know that the deaths have a separate register and the registers were kept at the familyrecords centre, now at the PRO Kew. If you follow the link you can search Kew archives.
