Hi Everyone - I wonder if anybody can help me with this one?

In the 1871 Census, I have found my g-g-g-grandfather (James Newey) and g-g-g-grandmother (Ann Newey, nee Gibbons) and their son my g-g-grandfather (James Newey) living in the 'Bridges Tavern' on Curzon St, Nechells. I can't seem to find any evidence of this pub, if that's what it was, existing. In the 1861 census, they seem to have been living and working at a provision shop on Heneage St. They all seem to have been involved in the gunmaking trade, although the older James Newey's father, again James Newey! is listed on James and Ann Gibbon's wedding certificate as what looks like a 'Maltsman' - that's the only brewing related info I can find!

Can anyone help at all with the 'Bridges Tavern', please?

Thank you x

Retail Brewers/ Maltsmen et al

Hello & Welcome eljayen :)

There were lots of private/ almost "home-brew" establishments back
in 1860,s-early 1900,s, many known as "Retail Brewers, small pubs.
Try putting your 1871 info, Bridges Tavern ,Curzon Street, James Newey
on the "Pubs" section & Kelly,s directories section 1871 +/- years,
Sure to get you some informative results,
Best regards & good luck researching,
John Y

ps Just noticed your Heanage Street 1861 Provision shop,
Same applies, post on Kelly,s, should click on this 1,,,2 (two) lol

Thanks for the welcome, John!

Before I post the info in the Kelly's section, which i didn't even spot until you mentioned it (!), can you please explain what Kelly's is, or is there somewhere I can find out more about it?

Thanks again,

Lisa

Kelly,s

Hi eljayen :) The "Kelly,s" are a Trade & Business style directories going
back to early 1840,s? i think  they give Shop/Pub owners, Coal
merchants, Chimney sweeps, ooh all sorts of great info,
This site has a fair selection over various years & your information
should drop nicely into the Searching categories of the "Kelly,"
Cheers John Y:cool:

:excited:

you people are amazing! has anyone ever told you that?! only here five minutes and I'm already overwhelmed!

thank you both very much.

so does the '12' in the sentence mean that James Newey lived at number 12? or is that something else entirely?

(sorry for the silly questions).

yes number 12 is the premise address because he had conscripted to pay a fee for the entry in Kelly's and also it was classed as a business
when I have time I will see how long he was there as long as I have the Kelly's to cover these years
