brick works coventry rd

Astonian

gone but not forgotten
HI guys ;
does any of our forum members recall the old brick workings down coventry rd just passing the airport
it was there from the early years of birmingham and i think it closed down around the early 1960;
i think it came under bickernill at the time when the old coventry rd was known as the a 45 route long before the m I motor way was built
and the 45 took you into coventry via the old folshill rd into bell green ; and the walsgrave hospital
and just past there there a big transport cafe for lorry drivers of all sizes used to pull in it was always chock a block good greasy spoon
but then the highways and health and safty issues ;rules came out and removed it ; but the brick works was there long before
they would pile all the made bricks stacked up high out side the grounds it was possibly 1800 it could have started any body got picts of it
incidently i drove up that way back home with the daughter from coventry rd and my memories came flooding back about my younger single days when i was a young drivers mate and we used to have police escort on the rd to most parts of the country
and that inspired me to mention it on the forum today ; also passing i think the horse and coaches pub that got burn down many years ago is now an aldi super store ; and they are building yuppie appartments for the proffessional along coming up that dual carrige way which are actuly built between the one way system best wishes astonian ;;

Hi Astonian,

Hope you are ok. I think the brickworks you are referring to
are on the right hand side going out of Birmingham just before
the Stonebridge island. They share an entrance with Bickenhill
Waste Disposal, and are now known as Redland. I'm not sure if
they still make bricks, but the the old tall brick chimney is still
there

Kind regards

Dave

The one on the right hand side is no longer in operation. It is now home to what looks like a plant hire and possibly demolition, business.

hi bernie and dave.
many thanks for your follow up on my thread about the brick works many years ago as i think i said it was operational up till about
1961 or 64 ; we used to pass it daily on our way to the big companies ; machine bumping as its was called
we went to them all the car works and jcb ; and the rolls company ; london scotland manchester we was every where
i worked for PMT ; Machine tools of coventry in those days ;and i recall seeing the big chimmney belowing and thousonds of bricks stacked high inside and out on the high way ; many thanks guys astonian;

The brickworks was still in operation until the mid 70's at least, I called in there more than once for packs of bricks, I cant be sure now but I think it was the London Brick Company but I'm not a hundred percent on that. Part of it now is Solihull Council's domestic waste station, you know the place you take your rubbish to when the dustmen miss you.

hi phil ;
yes i think you are correct in saying it was the london brik company we passed it for years on the wagon even called in to the transport cafe that was close bye for a truckers special before heading into cov. or down the smoke for the days and night over stopps
i do not surpose you can think of the transport cafe can you ; a mile or two back up the rd on the cove ;
when i came up there last night i passed the section but i also noticed the chippie still down that neck of the woods that used to be micky the greeks chippie as well as the reandervuo on broad street oppersite the towrope way back then ;he also had one at the top of soho rd facing st michaels church at the same tm if you can recall mick the greek ; best wishes astonian

Yes morris sure you are right have been trying to remember what they were called as I am sure London Brick where only produced Bedford due to the clay needed less fuel to fire. I think LBC had a depot to distribute bricks on the A45 but did not manufacture there.

When I lived in Knowle that tip was my nearest and I clearly remember going there in the 90s and seeing the bricks in the yard next to the tip.

Yes David they certainly used the site until not all that long ago but mainly I believe for the storage and distribution of bricks . Not sure when it ceased to be a manufacturing site.
