Brantley Road, Witton

Brummie babby
I was born at 172 Brantley road with my parents Lily & Phil Casey and my brothers, Charles Philip and Andrew. I remember lots of old neighbours Mr & Mrs Yates in the grocers shop on the corner of the entry which led through to Deykin Avenue School. Next door were Mr & Mrs Chiles with Robert Avril & Paul. Cousins to Chris Short.
On the other side of the entry was Mr & Mrs Dugmore with my best friend Betty and her siblings Christine, Janet, Sheila and Alan. Mr & Mrs Jay with their daughter Sheila. The Taylors who we noted that their older son died at an all to early age. There was another Taylor family unrelated with Christine, Margaret Phil in the flats, also Mr & Peggy Chant with Douglas, Stephen & sister. The Freeman family with Susan. The Godfrey boys and their sister Lynn. Pemmie Hornsey and her handsome lad Jonny who was in the Navy. Lynn Platts with Graham & older boys. The Borthwick twins Bobby and oh dear another forgotten name. Sylvie and brother Sid Morris. Johny Jones who had a younger brother. Brian Lawrence. Stephen Hunt. I went to senior school in Kingstanding so lost touch with lots of my neighbours but then years later saw their parents as I worked in Huggetts butchers in Tame Road and also The Newsagents in Tame Road. From Tame road my best buddy was Sandra Seal with her little brother Richard, The Hancher family. Margaret, Stephen, Avril and Stephen. The Houghtons John Robert Gillian and Darrel.
I now live in Herefordshire with my husband and sadly no kiddies for us but we have lots of nieces and nephews who now bring to visit us great nieces/nephews and even great great nieces/nephews.
My oldest brother Charles had 3 daughters and kept the tradition going with all granddaughters but he sadly died 3 years ago. Philip had a boy & girl and lives in Stoke and youngest brother Andrew has two sons 3 grandsons and 2 granddaughters and he lives in Erdington.
So many more names but my brain is back in yesteryear now. Hope I've brought a bit of remembrance back to you. Regards Kath

Hi Kath You sure have a great memory.my name is Robert of the Houghtons .I delivered papers from the news agents in Tame Road ,my round started in Brantley Rd, do you remember the Birds of Brantley and Brian Ward who lived up the top end in the flats in Brantley near to Sid Morris.I pop down Tame Road to see a old school friend by the name of Micky Mooney, Best Rob

Hi Robb, Yes I remember the Birds and am checking some info with my brother Phil about Brian Ward. Don't know too many folk from down your end of Tame road but I well remember your lovely Mom, I used to love coming to yours with Gillian and in later years your Mom would always give my cheeks a rub whenever I saw her. I remember Susan Whitmore who lived by you and of course all the small factories and the café. Haven't been down that way for a long time now but its on the list to do a tour of our childhoods as my husband Terry was born in Lichfield Road. We both went to Yew Tree Road School too. I bumped into your brother John a while back he remembered my brother Phil and I think you would be my late brother Charles' age. Nice to hear the names of folk from long ago. Regards, Kath.

Hi Christopher
Many thanks for your reply and may I say how very sad I was to hear of the passing of your Margaret and at such an early age too.
It was lovely to hear all about my old next door neighbours the Chiles. And I've thought of a few more names, Elaine Rolls, Maureen Bradley and her daughter, Timmy Harrison, The Roberts family who were friends with the Timmins family in Tame Road. Also Tame road the fishing tackle shop run by the Palmers and so their son John Palmer round in Brantley Road. That was next door to Hands corner shop run by Bob Hands. On the opposite corner of Brantley road there was a taxi business and the lady who ran that would let the local kids take her dog for a walk, her name escapes me for now. Next to them was the pork butchers owned by Mrs Roberts and run by her two big strapping sons. Harold Weaver the barber I can still visualise Mrs Weaver. Old man Thomson used to live next door to the newsagents and his window ledge was always stuffed with geranium cuttings. Oh the things we remember eh? When I worked at the butchers there were the Saturday lads Carl Fordham-Moms name Jimmi, Carl Forknall, Michael erm Jones? whose mom was a tiny Irish lady and he went training for the police force.

My Mother was born in Brantley Road at No.35 and lived there until she married in 1935. This is going back a long way since she was born in 1908. She attended Deykin Avenue School. She used to go to the shops in Tame Road quite often for many years after she left. The street hasn't changed that much over the years. The houses have generally been modernised. The River Tame still threatens to flood at times. Here are a couple of links to Keith Berry's photo file with photos of Witton,Tame Road, Brantley Road: Keith lived with his wife for many years in Brantley Road. The house was his wife's family home for many years. Sadly, Keith passed away four years ago. His photographs have left us a wonderful legacy to view: https://www.pbase.com/beppuu/aston and https://www.pbase.com/beppuu/old_bham&page=4

My mums house 201 Tame Rd pictured by Keith Berry. It's the house with the full length tiled canopy over
the front window. Memories

Many thanks Jennyann, I have seen all the pictures many times on Keith's site and so have all my family. There is also a picture of the paper shop where I lived and worked for a few years and so did my Mom Lily Casey, and I swear the lady looking in through the shop window is my Mom but I guess its just wishful thinking. I'm afraid I'm not aware of any memories of your Mom or the Berry's but No. 172 was a fair way further up the road, I'd probably have known them by sight but not in name. Thanks once again and regards, Kath.
