Bott

rowan

Born a Brummie
My great, great Grandfather, JOSEPH TAYLOR BOTT age 46 was down as an IRON MANUFACTUER employing 16 men and 2 boys.
living at 448 Coventry Road, Aston, in 1881.

Is there any way of finding out where his factory was?

Many thanks :)

Bott Joseph Taylor, iron & brass bedstead makr. 45 Glover st in 1880 Then at 42 Glover Street in 1883

The above references was found in Kellys one of them the 1883, the clipping with the address and name on Coventry road also comes from the same Kelly's Some years later it becomes Bott Limited

The last clipping is from 1900 Kellys and shows the name of the FALCON BEDSTEAD WORKS plus another manufacturer with the same name, or indeed the same person with another manufactory.. Hope this helps

Rowan I have attached the section of Coventry Rd according to 1883 Kelly's Directory showing a Bott. The junctions are shown by "Here is..." so the section of the Coventry Rd can be identified. Mike is the absolute master at identifying a building location on the map & it is never long before he responds. Perhaps people can come up with pictures of the area, too or suggest the best books which contain photos of that stretch of road.

Thank you both so very much.

Do you think that the 2 Joseph Taylor Bott are one and the same seeing as the 2 addresses Glover Street and 135 Rocky Lane are both manufacturing similar things?

I see also that there is a JOHN BOTT living at the CEDARS, SHIRLEY ROAD, ACOCKS GREEN. I know there was a relative living in that address so maybe he is a brother of JOSEPH?

It is so sad because I knew nothing of this side of the family as my Father died 2 months before I was born, so they are an unknown quantity

Many thanks to you both again.

I think its one and the same person Rowan, but I guess you have to prove it to make sure you dont make a major cock up with your tree.

The two differing address may well indicate an expansion in business, there might well be more, I had not delved any deeper, although I did go fairly forward to I think 1915 and the business is still going, although its now a limited company. It would be brilliant if you could keep us informed of any progress you make.

Parry & Bott Ltd., Birmingham, spirit levels. (Possibly connected with Joseph Taylor Bott of Falcon Works, Glover St., maker of brass bedsteads c1900).

I have just found this on the web

Dont get carried away :) Small accurate steps is the best way to proceed. I'm sure one or more of the very clever people we have on this site will be able to help you further .
Best wishes in your search Rowan

Thanks Rod...............I'll calm down and take some deep breaths

But.............I'm a little impatient :stressed: 'cos I've been doing some overseas research for a dear friend and I've left most of this side to my brother who has lost alot of his research in a flood  :'(

Oh well onward and upward :D

I like to empower researchers, so here are a few links that you could try.

Midlands Historical Data is a treasure trove. It gives access to some electoral registers. The cds are excellent quality and, in my experience, searchable:

I am still hoping Mike will get intouch with an old map, but he is entitled to another life!

I'd have a chat with Alberta or Chris(POM) they have a few tricks and tips they could impart on you that would aid you in your research Im sure.

Rowan
I attach 2 maps showing the position of the house in coventry road and what I am fairly sure is the factory.

Re: Another Bott

I have found FRANK THOMAS BOTT, unmarried, in the 1881 census living with his father JOSEPH TAYLOR BOTT and MOTHER brothers and sisters, at 448 Coventry Road.

I have found a marriage for a FRANK THOMAS BOTT to SELINA TAYLOR in1881 also a marriage for a FRANK THOMAS BOTT to LOUISA JOHNSON in 1897.

Did FRANK marry twice or were all his children (including JAMES HENRY) born out of wedlock?

HELP!!!................... please :)

Hi Rowan, Just to make sure you don't go along the wrong road, there is another family called Bott on the 1881 census. I am pretty sure that the marriages you have found are one from each of those families. Frank Thomas who married in 1881 must be the 20 year old son of Joseph Taylor Bott and Julia, and the Frank Thomas who married Louisa Johnson in 1897 could be the son of Samuel Bott and Selina, he was shown as Frank age 9 on the 1881 census.

Samuel Bott is shown as being an Engine Fitter and Furniture Dealer in 1881. Living at 178 Watery Lane.

To make things a bit more interesting!!!! Samuel Bott has a son called Joseph Taylor Bott age 15 on the 1881 census.

Before you go further I think you should be absolutely certain you have the right family. Do you know which of the sons is your ancestor.

Thank you Di.
I think my FRANK and his family were living at 38 Victoria Street Bordsley in 1891 but I have been told they are listed as BOBB!!

Frank age 30, Selina age 30, Frank J.T age 9, Harold G. age 7 Ruby E age 4,
JAMES H (my grandfather) age 2, Thomas E age 2 mths.

Also a Selina Bott died in 1896 aged 35.

This is what has been sent to me so the question remains.........did Frank marry twice??

I have a feeling he may have done as he had so many children and I believe this is what the men did in those days.
