Hello to you all,

I am new to this forum, so forgive me if I am posting on the wrong message board. This is my first post.

I am a doctoral student from Melbourne, Australia and am researching the life, music, spirituality and pastoral context of Bishop Charles Henry Davis, OSB (1815-1854). He was born in Usk, Monmouthshire and studied at St. Gregory's Downside Abbey, Bath in 1826. He eventually became a priest, then bishop, then travelled to Sydney as a missionary and died there.

I am researching his family background at present; hence my message here. His brother, Michael Davis also studied at Downside, but didn't follow through to priesthood. He became a lawyer in Usk, and married a girl (Catharina Borini) from Birmingham. Her father was Peter Borini, a manufacturer of thermometers, barometers, clocks, etc. in Birmingham. They moved back to Usk and raised a family there.

I would assume Michael Davis met his wife while in Birmingham studying law, since Birmingham is about 180km from Usk in Wales. Given the courtship period, etc. he must have been in Birmingham a while. I cannot locate any universities that may have been teaching law in the 1820s in Birmingham. It seems there was a Medical University opened in the early 1820s, but this would not be relevant to me, unless it had a law wing?

If anyone has any hints for me, I would be indeed grateful to you. I will fully acknowledge you and your information in my thesis.

Sincerely,

Graeme Pender

Hello Graeme,

The medical school was founded in 1825 by William Sands. By 1843 it had become Queen's College and had been extended at the back by a quadrangle and chapel. It had also added faculties of engineering, architecture and theology. So perhaps he was there studying theology.

Graeme,

You may already have this information. In 1841 Catharina Borini (age 20 on the census) is living in Bull Street Birmingham with her father Peter Borini (age 50 and born in foreign parts), who, at that time, was a carver and gilder. Catharina married Michael Davis in the July to September quarter of 1842 in Birmingham.

In the 1816/17 Commercial Directory Peter Borini is living at 89 Bull Street Birmingham and is a carver and gilder.
