Bolton Road, Bordesley

Flamenco Brummie
Does anyone know if this road still exists? the address I have from the 1891 census is 2 back, 455 Bolton Road. (I am presuming the back ref means a back to back? Have only seen the NT ones in the centre.) K

This is probably Bolton Road, Small Heath, near Cooksey Road and Golden Hillock Road. Bordesley would have been the registration Dirstrict I think.

If it is this Bolton Road, then yes, it does still exist.

Hello kah Bolton road still exists in the same location but was rebuilt under an urban renewal scheme in the early 1970s.None of the back houses survive today Bernie

bernie

As you say none of the old Bolton Rd buildings remain, but the best part of the road, the Railway Club is still open, mind you its a year or two since I was in there.

Many thanks Bernie and Sue. Would love to see a photo one day but probably unlikely! K

Phil I haven't had a drink in the railway club for at least 20 years don't know if its still open ,the Tyseley one is Bernie

hello Kah there is a site with photos of Small Heath https://www.smallheathcircle.com/.hmtl the site is run by Jerry also a member of this site if you don't find what you'r after there put the road back on this forum as some members have vast collections of photos . It may be worth googling "Phylis Nicholin" she photographed a lot of Brum during redevelopment and some of her work is available free .Sorry about the delay invasion of the grandkids still picking biscuit and toffee out of my hair .That should read Phylis Nicklin Bernie

Kah,

Bolton Road goes right round to the back of Arthur Street Bus Depot. My grandparents lived at 3 Back of 393 Bolton Rd. in 1911.

Bernie,

It comes up easily if you just google small heath circle. Thank you. Good site, some nice photos and memories.

My grandparents lived at 2/396 until Nan died in 1965, so they lived quite near to yours eh?? The Chamberlains lived in Cambridge Terrace.:)

Dolphie,

Yes, looks like the two families lived very close. They were in Arthur Street before Bolton Road.

These 2 photos perhaps show how the terraced houses were at the back of the main Bolton Road & also the sort of little houses that they were. The B & W pic of my Mom was taken in the front garden & you can see the main houses behind her, The other is of my Auntie in the front garden of their house so she would have turned left out the gate to go down the entry to the main road (Bolton Rd) Hope this helps.......

Dolphie,

Thank you so much for sharing your family photos. Great to see how it used to look.

Ann

A photo of some local lads on what I assume is a bomb site, (it looks as if they have all had a quick scrub for the photo) as it was taken c1950 I would think it too early for demolition of the area to have started. I would think that the location would be easily recognisable to an ex resident of the street.

My memories of Bolton Rd only go back as far as just prior to demolition even then I don't think I ever got down that way much.

Phil

I lived at 393 Bolton Road before the houses were demolished in the early 1970's - while I lived there all the houses at the back had already been knocked down when I was living there and it was like a bombpeck area. If I remember correctly these houses were pulled down around 1974.

Hi Elizabeth,

That's incredible that you lived at 393 Bolton Rd. Although, you say, the 'back of' had gone, when you were there. I hadn't realised that the houses were still there in the 70's. I notice also that you have the surname Savage in your surname interests. A niece of my Bolton Rd. grandparents married a Thomas Frederick Savage.
And my grandfather was born in Cromwell St. A few coincidencies!

Hi Ann

I was living there till 1974/1975 and there were still residents there when we left to move from there.

I have a couple of Savages in my tree a George Savage born c1780 was father of Sarah Savage born 1818 she Married a John Clifton 16/10/1837
Sarah's father was George Savage a Labourer.
Witnesses show as George Savage and Hannah Savage - could be sister/brother ?? aunt/uncle?? need to research further.
No address shows on wedding cert other than Kings Heath - B'ham was this a Gypsy/Travellers site? I am not sure what the Heath was back then - but I do know there was some circus people in the family years ago - not sure if this is where/how it connects to that.

1861 b.K.Norton
1861 - RG9/2025 folio 71 pg 28 Victoria St, W. Bromich
1871 - RG9/2979 folio 94 pg 12 Victoria St, W. Bromich
1881 - RG11/2959 folio 100 pg 5 - 60 Brook St Harborne (widow)

Other than this I don't know any more about them yet. If I find out more I'll come here and PM you with what I learn as it may connect somewhere later on.

In the late 70s early 80s the News of the World reported on a house haunted by a Poltergeist in Bolton Rd.I recall a photo of the mother of the kids aswell.
Don't suppose anyone recalls it?

I don't remember it at all - may have been after we'd left there.

I remember a fire in a house further up the road towards Golden Hillock Road - it was to do with a parafin heater - everyone was OK and got out of the house from what I remember.

There was a little shop nextdoor to our house - used to sell parafin, sweets, fire wood and bits and peices etc.. Jack and Nellie Bromich owned it. They had a daughter who worked at the BSA factory.

My Gt Grandfather lived at 347 Bolton Rd in 1911. His name was Clement Johnson and his wife was Helen. They had a grown up son living with them called Douglas. He was a 'porter milk' which I assume was a milkman! Clement was a baker, but in 1911 was window cleaning. Anyone know of them? I often wonder what happened to all their children that were listed on the 1901 census but had 'gone' by the 1911 one.

Maggie
