Bloomsbury Street, Nechells

theodore

master brummie
I lived in Bloomsbury Street during the very late 40's through the 50's and early 60's (this was about the time the area was redeveloped). I would be interested to know when Bloomsbury Street was first developed. I have found some census returns for the house I lived at, 255 Bloomsbury Street but would like to know the earliest date for this Street.

HI THEO you have just pipped me t the post of asking the same question about bloomburys street as to when it first openened as my grand parents and there parents had contacts there

Hi Theodore

I think you would be able to trace Bloomsbury St back to 1834 at least but I think prior to that it was mostly fields it is shown on the maps as Bloomsbury St after that date and before it is simply marked "to Coleshill". There again I am only going by maps and I have no other evidence to back it up.

The history of Birmingham placenames A to Y says it can be traced back to 1830, see here https://billdargue.jimdo.com/placenames-gazetteer-a-to-y/places-b/bloomsbury/

Hi Theo
Probably too early for you to remember but my Gt Grandmother Louisa Reynolds / Nash had 2 shops on Vauxhall Rd where the new fire station is now, one was a fruitiers the other a tripe dressers. Here is a pic of her 2nd husband Phil Nash outside the fruitiers shop. Let me know if anyone in your family has any memories. Thanks Lulu

The 1839 map shows Bloomsbury Place covering Bloomsbury St plus a portion of what we would think of as Ashted Row .

Hi all,

Many thanks for your postings relating to Bloomsbury Street.

Dek, if possible it would be great to see the photograph of the tram travelling up Bloomsbury St.

Phil, the photo you attached does actually show my old house. This must have been about the time the area was starting to be redeveloped.

Steward, sorry can't help you with the names Blake/Smith, hope you manage to get a photo for your mom soon.

Mike, like Lulu it would be interesting to see a larger version of the map if possible.

Thanks again to one and all, it was really interesting to find a little more info on Bloomsbury Street the place I spent my earliest years.

Regards

Peter

Here you are Theo although the tram is in the distance the tram lines can be seen clearly it,s old not sure what year but later the routes were changed to Gt Francis St and Gt Lister St. Dek

There is a version of the whole map on the mapseeker website at https://www.mapseeker.co.uk/genealogy/?id=1123&areaA=a1&areaB=a4 . you can click and click again to get a magnified version of an area. Unfortunately, at present, the particular square in which Bloomsbury place is situated appears to not come up (you just get a red cross in a square , or another symbol, depending on browser). The other subdivisions seem to show OK though.

Hi Mike & Dek,

Thanks for photo Dek ( I thought the pub on the corner was the Turks Head or was that at the other end of the street, but it was a long time back and the old memory not as good now) and Mike thanks for the website for the map.

Regards

Peter

Theo the Turks Head was at the crossroad with Saltley Rd and Gt Lister St the Junction (before it became an Atkingsons House) was up by Ashted Row. Here,s a photo a bit later with the trams coming up Gt Francis St.Dek

Thanks for that.
I remember the Beehive and Pretty Ladies (I think that was the name, opposite the police station) on Bloomsbury St. and the Eagle top Weston Street. A pub on every corner it seemed.

Peter
