Blews St/ Brewery St, Aston.

master brummie
This is a query lifted from the Canalworld forum today. Can anyone help?

An area called either Blews Street Wharf, Blews Wharf, or Brewery Wharf was mentioned to me recently, which from the contemporary road names appears to be at the top of the Aston Flight on the northern side. Does anyone have any images or history of the area?

I assume this is the area bounded by Newtown Row, Brewery St and the Birmingham Fazeley Canal.

Hello Curly,

You are correct in your assumption & the area is half-mile from City Centre "Newtown" or " Blews Street Park" as we knew as kids,
Newtown Row (B4114) main road crosses over a large canal there so this i presume is the B,ham Fazeley Canal,
Blews Street B6 4HN ,,good map on AA Routefinder; had a Wharf leading to the canal,,, & Brewery Street is B6 4JB if you need further info
Cheers John

Thank you John. I have managed to find a map of the location elsewhere on BHF, so now looking for history. Apart from the Britannia Nail Factory, who else operated from these wharves and what is the Brewery St connection? Was it Britannia Brewery? Did they use these Wharves? Anybody?

Here is a composite map from c 1889 of the area. The origins of brewery st are obscure. Certainly there was no brewery (other htan the very small affairs that many pubs then had onsite) back to 1845. A 1829 map shows no branch off the canal at that point and Brewery St is there at that time, though the map does not give enough named detail to say whether there was then a brewery in it.

Hello.
I read somewhere on one of the sites that Holbrooks factory was bombed November 19th./20th. 1940.
Can someone please tell me if the factory was anywhere near Legge Street, Gosta Green. ????
Thanks,
Betty.

You'll find that this factory was in Ashted Row, some half mile away from Legge St. THIS 'Ashted Row' thread shows a map with the vinegar brewery clearly shown. (post #6).

If you do a google search on - Holbrooks Factory, Birmingham, bombed - you will see numerous other references to Holbrook and the bombing.

Hello Curly,
Many thanks for your help. That should keep me going ALL day tomorrow.
Why I asked was, because we were bombed out at the beginning of the war but do not know when.
We lived in Digby Street which was off Legge Street and I thought maybe we were bombed at the same time
as Holbrooks ? `Spose it stands a chance.
Once again, many thanks,
Betty.
