The Wake Green Estate in Moseley [centred around St Agnes Church] was owned in the early 1800s by one Joseph Dyott [hence Dyott Road] a brush manufacturer with premises in Bradford Street. The estate was bounded by Billesley Lane, Wake Green Road, Stoney Lane [now Yardley Wood Rd.] and what is now Moseley Golf Course. Joseph and his wife had no children and they adopted a poor relative called Matthew Boulton who was born in Turvey, Bedfordshire in 1807.

As his family had fallen on hard times, Matthew Boulton was adopted by Joseph Dyott at “an early period of his youth” and after having been “carefully brought up and liberally educated was retained as the attentive and useful companion of his declining years” [info from memorial in St Mary’s Church, Moseley].

Joseph Dyott died on 30 October 1837 age 83 and was buried at Moseley Parish Church as had been his wife. In his will probated on 18 December he left the estate and other property to Matthew Boulton. Matthew had a tablet placed in St Mary's Church, Moseley to Joseph Dyott in “token of grateful esteem” and consecrated to his memory.

Joseph & Matthew and their descendants lived in Wake Green House on the corner of Billesley Lane and Wake Green Road until its demolition in about 1905.

This Matthew Boulton was the great grandnephew of Matthew Boulton of Soho.
