Birminghams Children's Hospital - Ladywood Middleway

My son was in one of those cots in 1974 for his operation there. The waiting space at Outpatients was always crowded.
I also attended in the early '50's because of my legs, I'm sure there was a large rocking horse near a window but is my memory playing tricks?!

hi rosie i would think a rocking horse would have been very appropriate in a childrens hospital so more than likely you did not imagine it

I guess I was in a cot similar to that shown in the photograph. I was about four years old at the time, which was during the blitz on Birmingham; although the nurse told me it was a thunderstorm, I was in for my tonsils removal.
I understands that the present children's hospital in situated in Steelhouse Lane, formerly known as the General Hospital.
 
it doesn't look like the hospital seems strange now used to be in there quite a lot when i was younger from a baby to my teenage years
 
Hi Rosie, I remember a large (to me) rocking horse in the waiting room where I had to go to have my eyes checked must have been in the mid '50s. I went there regularly but we always went through the back entrance where the car park was.
 
I walked past the Old Childrens Hospital on Ladywood Middleway a month or so ago. The building from the roadside seemed in a fair condition. The casino which had operated there had closed and I see it fell into administration. I wonder what the future will bring for this historic building? There's a clear recent picture on the link.

Hi there yes there was a rocking horse it was big and black loved it.

i went past there 2 days before christmas derek and the building still looks in good order..never seemed right to me that the childrens hospital was turned into a casino dont ask me why but it just didnt seem appropriate but i guess at least it was being kept aired :D ..keeping my fingers crossed for this building now

Thanks for the update Lyn. Let's hope this building finds a useful purpose, I share your feelings about the ex-casino.
