Birmingham's Big Centre TV Channel

Not sure if this has been posted before - I did a search and couldn't find any reference to it so I apologise in advance if I've slipped up!

Local TV for Birmingham, The Black Country and Solihull is due to start on Saturday 28 February (to be known as Big Centre TV). It is on Freeview 8 (your TV tuning may need to be updated) and information about Big Centre TV is already being broadcast.

Re: Local TV

Another big event in the city's history starts at 6pm tonight!

This must be a very localized transmission. As far as I know - on Freeview tv guide and on my television set - Freeview Channel 8 is BBC Four. Maybe this is this a daytime only channel: it maybe as BBC Four does not commence until 7pm.

PS: Just noticed that Wendy said starting at 6pm. Curiouser and curiouser. :friendly_wink:

It mentioned on local news it will be broadcast from a Walsall studio, not a TV person myself so will probably give it a miss

BBC4 is Freeview Channel 9 and as far as I'm aware this applies all across the UK. Local TV is on Channel 8 in England and Northern Ireland and Channel 23 in Scotland and Wales. The nearest local TV to Devon at the moment is 'Made' in Bristol although I doubt that Devon would be within range. See https://www.freeview.co.uk/localtv

In Norfolk they have recently commenced a local TV programmed called MUSTARD, which goes out on Channel 8, from 6.30 - 10.30, Monday to Friday. It is on Free View.

It appears that Channel 8 is being used for local TV stations around the country, and each locality will only cover a small area.

The Mustard TV channel appears to be struggling, and viewers still seem to watch the local BBC channel, LOOK EAST.

My mistake. Well I hope it is more interesting than most of the repeats or other mediocre programmes on offer.

On our TV BBC 3 is 7 and BBC4 is 9 this leaves 8 free for the new channel but I am not sure if you would need to re-tune.

Hi,

I rescanned my TVs yesterday, and I think that as this channel would have been
unused in this area at the last rescan, most people would have to do the same.

Kind regards

Dave

Dave it has shown up on our EPG as coming soon for quite a while. If Crossroads is an example of what they plan to show I am not sure I will miss it that much.

I watched a small part yesterday and was pleased that they were showing Ice Hockey between Coventry and Solihull. I know they are not big names but at least its a local start.

Hi Bernard,

I think it's probably because I tend to rescan very regularly, and before this rescan Channel 8 didn't appear
in the list of channels.

I've got a few sets around the house, most fed from my loft aerial, and those rescanned ok.
The one in my 'den' has an amplified set top type aerial, and is fine with all other channels,
but the rescan wouldn't include Big Centre, so I took the set to the main aerial outlet, and
did the rescan there. Back on the set top aerial it does receive it, but the signal is weak
and tends to break up. I wonder if it's on a separate MUX, as I don't have any problem with
all the other channels.

As you say, there doesn't appear to be a great incentive to watch it if the current content is
typical!

Kind regards

Dave

I watched part of their output on Sunday and it looks like they're still learning how to do things. The green-screen stuff on the news bulletins has some odd lighting which makes people look like they've got an outline. There are also shows that could get better content - or at least I hope they could. There was a music show that had what was supposedly the best talent in the region. Not really up to a lot of the no-hopers I remember from the local pub circuit.
