Can anyone tell me the name or names of local newspapers in Birmingham which were in print between 1915 and 1920, as I am hoping to find a obituary for a relation of mine. His name was George Martin and he was a Manufacturer of Saddlery, Harnesses and Leather Goods. I think he may have died in 1917.
Grateful for any help.
Val

That was quick Derek. Thankyou for the info. I will try their website.
Val

I meant to ask Derek, do they keep copies of past editions or will I have to contact Birmingham Library?
Val

I think our messages crossed. I do have details of him from the 1911 census.
George Martin, boarder, 61, married, Manufacturer Leather Goods Employer, London. He was staying at 59-63 Regency Square Brighton.
Looks as if he was on a Business trip. His family are as follows
Marion Martin, wife, married 23yrs, age 49, 3childen born, 2 surviving 1 death, Jersey C.I.
Russell C Martin son, single, 19, Helps his father Wholesale Saddlery, Ealing London
Marion Martin daughter, single, 12 Aldridge Staffs
There are also names of the staff who were working at the family home, Hartopp Court Four Oaks Hartopp Road Sutton Coldfield.
Russell's name was actually George Russell Courtney.

That is fantastic information, just wondered if I could have helped with that as I have small amount of time left on my subs to 1911.
Try Central Library about the obit, I have had call to use them in the past on BMD matters and they are very good.

Good Luck Val

Derek

Thanyou so much Derek for all your help and advice. I will try the Library.
Much Gratitude
Val

You may get an obituary from Aris's Gazette these are in books at the library. I found one for my gt grandfather in 1919. I wonder if the house is still there, the houses are beautiful in this area right next to Sutton Park.

Thankyou Wendy for that info. I will mention this Gazette besides the Birmingham Post and Mail when I contact the Library. I am unable to visit the Library in person so I will engage one of their researchers to look for me.
Once again Many Thanks
Val

Dont anyone remember when Birmingham had two evening newspapers, The Mail and the Evening Despatch, I delivered them both during the War. Bernard

There were also a Birmingham Gazette and Birmingham Despatch newspapers (well advertised on the Birmingham trams). The Despatch later merged with the Mail.

I can see that poor researcher spending a lot of time pouring over all these Newspapers to find George's Obituary. It certainly will keep her busy. Hopefully one of them will have it featured.
Val

The Aris's obituary books only contain obituary's this is why I mentioned it. These are easy to search. The other papers are on microfiche and more long winded!

I will ask the researcher to look at this book first, hopefully it will save me some money.
Many Thanks Wendy for the tip.

Yes, Elizabeth, the Evening Dispatch was smaller, and much easier than the Mail to read on a crowded bus going home from work.

pink Argus.
