Birmingham Coroner's Court

I thought members may like to know that the Coroner's Court on Newton Street will be moving to another building towards the end of the year. It is moving next door to the Juvenile Court. The old Coroner's Court only had one court room whereas the Juvenile Court will be able to provide us with three court rooms and far more space for both staff and visitors.

I know how fond people are of old buildings - but the Coroner's Court is not the nicest place to work. The heating system is shocking, the walls are crumbling, the court itself is dated and uncomfortable. It simply isn't fit for purpose. The building won't be demolished but at this stage, I don't know what it will be used for.

All of our old inquest files are currently in the process of being moved to the Library archives where they will be safely stored for future generations. The files go back to 1870.
