One of the less known aspects of Birmingham was the Compressed Air establisment in Artillery Street, that used steam engines to compress air that was pumped in pipes along local streets to provide compressed air to work engines in various factories nearby. The problems of keeping the pipes sealed and prevent leaks did not ensure commercial success and the premises were sold. Another ill-fated business Birmingham Carbide had a part the premises until 1900 and later the site was occupied for paint making
