I have found in Kellys 1897 Directory Birmingham another relative who was a shopkeeper, described as a bird dealer.

Would a bird dealer sell exotic birds, or dead birds for consumption?

The shop was at 26 Moseley Street Birmingham.

Thanks

Paul.

In https://raymant.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html it gives this quote from The Times:
An interesting article appeared in the London Times Monday March 28 1864 that a "George Raymant, a plasterer from Battersea was assaulted by James Elsley a bird dealer who sold George a canary but in reality was a painted green finch. The dealer promptly hit George on the head" . This George could have been me or my son, something we will never know.
This would seem to confirm that, in this case, it was exotic birds he dealt in.

Hello Paul E about 6/7 years ago I lived in Norfolk and I used to go to several Auctions one of the Auctioneers who used to run Rare breed s Auctions of all types of birds including poultry his name was Fabian R Eagle , he had his own way of auctioning an item I will try and put it into words ,ie wun =£1, arf=50p so if someone bid a pound he started like so , wunwunwunwunerarfarfarfarftutututuerarfarfar all delivered in what seemed one breath and in a sing/song manner so to my knowledge birds still get sold the same way unless the regulations have changed cheers Tom

Hi my great grand was a bird dealer, ran a pet shop on the Lichfield road Aston in the 1920,s

In the 1940/50s there was a shop in Bordsley Green (op.the Elite) who sold pigeons. Whould he have been classed as a bird dealer?

Regards Joe
