Birch - Who was Catharine? Help please

judith allport

master brummie
William Birch married Catharine ? She is noted on the 1861 census as being 20 and having two children John (5) and Sampson(4), so if the info is correct she married very young. William Birch was 27 at the time of the census and lived at Rising Sun Pub,Park Lane Oldbury.

Re: Who was Catharine? Help please

hi judith, in 1860 there is a marriage in birmingham of william birch which could be to catherine home. i expect william was married before so the two children would be the first wifes.

Re: Who was Catharine? Help please

Thanks Shera, good thinking. Thank you. How would I find out who his first wife was? Judith

Re: Who was Catharine? Help please

im struggling to find his first wife with the name being so common. i thought i may have the wrong marriage for catherine as they were all born and living in worc. but looking at the 1861 census you mentioned, they have a visitor who looks like frances home. she is unmarried aged 24 so this could be catherines sister.
i was hoping to find a baptism for sampson birch on the igi site, but cant see one. this would give the parents - william and ??? birch so that would have helped find the marriage.
if you can find the birth cert of one of the two children, you could send for it and it would have mothers full name on it.

Re: Who was Catharine? Help please

Shera, the free BMD has come up with Ann Maria Higgott or Elizabeth Walker for Mar 1856 quarter as possibilities for his first wife. Ann Maria died c 09.1959 and Elizabeth died c 09.1858. the latter was born c 12.1938.

Re: Who was Catharine? Help please

its very difficult due to the common names. i cant find a birth cert either for a sampson birch. there are a couple of entries which could be him with no christian name, i.e. male birch, and just birch, but thats just a guess. john birch could be the one that leslam found you on post 5 but there are others around that time too. perhaps you could send for the birth cert requesting that the father must be william. even that wouldnt be certain as william birch is so common. sorry i cant think how else to help you with that one :(

Re: Who was Catharine? Help please

Thank you both for your help Leslam and Shera. As you say it is a common name; at least it's not Smith or Jones though!
