Hi folks not posted for sometime, hope all are as well as can be. I‘m still stuck in Skeg trying to sell bungalow, gave up dropping price as no one seems to be out there.

I’m trying to find out how I can trace back my nan’s father (Benjamin Whitehouse) who died when she was about 6 months (I’m fairly sure on that).

1881 census: Benjamin Whitehouse born abt 1853 married to Sarah, reckon around mid 1870’s as oldest child Arthur is 7.

Found a could be match in 1871 census RG10 Piece 3048 - Folio 83 - Page 32

Benjamin living with mother Ann Whitehouse and brother William.

Now then if I get marriage certificate of he and Sarah it will I guess shows Father’s name, however can’t see that being much help if not on 1871 census.

Suggestions on how I can trace back please.

would this be the family in 1861 living worcester

thomas whitehouse 44 glover b. worcester
ann whitehouse 43 dressmaker b. gloucester
alfred 22 glover, thomas h. 15 glover, james 12, benjamin 7 and william 3.

if they are correct, there is a marriage of thomas whitehouse to ann spier 1st jan 1838 in worcester

and a christening of benjamin william whitehouse on 27 march 1853 at all saints, worcester. parents thomas and ann whitehouse

also christenings of other children thomas henry 4 jan 1846, william 27 nov 1859, jane 1 oct 1848, charles 8 jun 1851, alfred 19 may 1838. all at all saints worc. and parents thomas and ann whitehouse

1851 at all saints worc.

thomas whitehouse 34 glover b. all saints worc.
ann whitehouse 32 dress maker b. glouc.
alfred 12 errand boy, thomas 5, james 2, charles 2 mths.

Shera,

Thank you for the information.

I’ve came across Thomas and Ann in Free BMD, but thus far no way to connect to Benjamin I’m interested in, which is of course isn‘t saying there isn’t one.

The middle name of William is an area of doubt as on the IGI index there is a marriage between Benjamin Whitehouse (No William given) and Sarah Slater in 1873.

Thus do you know if his middle name was William should it show on marriage certificate?

the middle names are often not included on marriage certs. not certain it is your benjamin but where born and date of birth seem to be correct.

ive just checked to see if there are other family trees on ancestry with your benjamin.

it seems they have gone for the same parents i have. but not sure its correct. they have two marriages - one to a sarah a. (whitehouse) b. 1856 listed with 3 children, florence, henrietta and may.
but another wife - frances nightingale b. 1857 with whom he apparently had abt 8 children, but at the same years, i.e. as if he had 2 wives. it states he died 6 dec 1922 in london, and gives his birth as 15 feb 1853 in worcester. i dont know what to think about it???

Shera, thanks again

Checked ICG and found Benjamin Whitehouse married Sarah Slater on 28 September 1873 at All Saints, Hockley St, B’ham England - this fits in with first known child Arthur being 7 on 1881 census.

Yes with so many families claiming Thomas and Ann are their descendents it makes one wonder, but not impossible if they had many children.

Now I know the church I guess my next action is wait until I visit or return to B’ham and have a look at micro- fiche in Central Library (Taking it you can still look).
