Re: Frederick Baxter 1857-1914

Hi Edrab,

I may be able to help you. My Great Great Grandfather, Frederick Baxter set up Baxters Bolts Screws and Rivets Limited along with his brother. The business then passed down generations from Frederick to Harry Baxter and then to Barry Baxter (my Grandfather) until it was sold - i think to GKN. If there is any specific information that you want to know I can speak to my father (William Paul Baxter or Uncle, Richard Baxter) and see if they are able to help as they both remember the factory and may have some archives. My uncle has a large portrait of Frederick Baxter which I will see if I can get a picture of.

Re: Frederick Baxter 1857-1914

Greetings from Australia, Andybax,

I was delighted to receive your 'post' - Frederick was the brother of my ggGrandfather, William Robert Baxter, so it appears that we share a common gggGrandfather in William Robert Sn and Amy.

My side of the Baxters retained little family history and I grew up with the vague story of a 'Baxter' who owned a 'Ball Bearing' Factory in Birmingham. Over the past couple of years I have established what it was and that Frederick was involved, but could not confirm that his brother Harry played a part, although it seemed probable as he was a metal worker (according to UK Census documents). I also found some references to Harold Wildsmith Baxter's involvement, and that of his son, Berwyn Baxter, along with references to the Kieft Sports car, his motor racing, the sale of Baxter's Rivet Works to GKN, and his retirement to Jersey.

But my interest in the family history of the Baxters is not just about places and dates - I want to leave my children and grandchildren with a sense of what is in their blood. So, while I would love copies of any photographs you may have of the factory and the ancestors (I have none at all beyond a couple of snaps of my grandfather), I would also love to know anything you (or your father or uncle) have about Frederick and his family - for example, how he came to change from being a solicitors clerk to an industrialist? What sort of man was he - another post I received, from the grandchild of a former employee, said he was a good employer who organised annual picnic days at his property, and was a sponsor of the 'Girls Friendly Society' - but could provide no details - confirmation would be most welcome.

And, of course, if there is anything I can help you with in relation to the Baxter Family History...just ask.

Cheers, Roger Baxter

Re: Frederick Baxter 1857-1914

Hi Roger,

Really good to hear from you so quickly. Yes it does appear that we do share the same ggg grandparents. The only thing that I know about your side of the family is that your Great Grandfather, Harry Baxter lived to the great age of 87 and died on 26th December 1944. It would be interesting to find out some more? The obvious question being - how did you end up down under?!

I will have to go around the family and see what archives they have - I am also aware of a Baxters Jubilee magazine that my parents have which I am sure will interest you. Baxters (Bolts, Screws and Rivets) Ltd was a very good place to work considering the times and the factory staff were treated like family. There are a few links that I have already found on the internet about the factory and its workers (listed below).

As for Berwyn Baxter, he unfortunately passed away in 2005 but his wife Joan is still alive. From what I know he did not have a great deal to do with the factory as he had a relatively sucessful career in racing instead.

Baxters made rivets for spitfires - here is the link for a reference in flightglobal:

Grace's guild link to the company:

Cheers - I will post what I am able to find out asap.

Hi Edna, and welcome,

Just a quick note to say I am delighted to connect with a daughter of Percival and granddaughter of my great uncle Frederick. I am sure we have information to swap and I'll be in touch again when time permits.
