Hi,
My Grandmother was Mary Ann Bassett and for a while, lived in Park Lane, Aston and later Victoria Road, She had a brother, John Thomas, who married twice, first wife I believe was Irish but don't know the name. He later married Florence Atkins, Mary Ann also had sisiters, Eliza, Alice, Amelia, Harriett and Ada.
Any connection to your Bassetts?
All the very best,
Dave Collins
Hi,
Tommy Bassett, the one armed window cleaner was John Thomas Bassetts son and saw the last days of his life on The Wyrley Birch Estate, near Witton Cemetery.
he gave my brother Bob a job and learned him the trade and due to Tom all the Houghton boys became window cleaners including my self will find out more or I can give you Bob's telephone number we used to clean windows in Aston to start with before going on to industrial cleaning
apparently my dad and Tom were schoolmates the story goes that Tom was hanging on the back of a horse and cart and fell under the wheels causing him to lose is arm do know of this story, was in son a ginger headed lad ?
Tom used to buy is leathers and mops from Rocky Lane no 9 he had them make him leather mops they liked them so much they made them for other window cleaners or sold them as a kit
Sorry John, couldn't follow the bit about Ginger heades son, Are you saying Tom Had a son, for as far as I know, he never married, There is,howeve, a lot of ginger hair in the family. My Great Grandmother, mother and myself all had ginger hair. I can't remember what caused the loss of arm, but somone mentioned he fell off a bike. The hoss and cart sounds more likely though.
Many thanks for the info.
Dave
