hi frothy
If my memory serves me correctly ;in the mid fifties there was a little cafe and a very small pub on the corner of barn stret and bordesly street
my grand parents and my mother was brought up there on the top end of bordesley street at the juction of new canal street
in fact it was number 1 new cannal street i used to walk my grand parents dog around the block in those day he was a black and white dog called patch
there shop and house was also a cafe for boarders of transport drivers ;the windows was alwayds steamed up the tea earn on the go twenty four seven;
just likthe other one in alma street windows always steamed up ; and i used to watch the cattle coming down and around the streets ;
Always on a sunday ;there was five cafes within walking distances of each other from barn street
have your self a nice day best wishes astonian;;

Thanks astonian. I love your walks down memory lane. I like nijinski would like to see any early photos of Barn street or Floodgate street where my mom was born.

thanks everyone for their information and thanks to berniew for the photos. they lived in terrible conditions, we don't know how lucky we are do we? berniew do you have any early 1900 photos of talfourd st thank you

Hello nijinski my dad was Alfred Kilmister, born in Barn street 1900. In 1911 census he was at New Canal street.

thanks berniew. i appreciate your help. my wife's grandparents lived in barn st and later talfourd st.

Sorry nijinski I don't know who the couple are . My nan lived on the r hand side of the entry in post #7 Milk Street from the early 40s to about 1960 and I lived in Small Heath till I was 22 years old Grange Road and Charles Road so both areas are familiar. Your right about the poor conditions but they were the norm and nobody thought much about them , it,s only looking back that you find it hard to believe these conditions were widespread until the mid 70s ,no inside loos or baths etc
regards Bernie

thanks for trying berniew. it was worth a try. we lived in conditions like that in the early 60s, we also had to share the outside loo. when we eventually moved top a semi with inside toilet and bath with running hot water also a garden, we felt we landed in luxury. thanks berniew
