Hi,

I'm hoping someone out there can help me with this one ...

I'm looking to find information on the parents of "Joseph MARKLEW" (at this moment they are unknown to me).

The information in have on Joseph so far is:-

Born ... 1787/1788 in Birmingham Warwickshire
1841, 1851, 1861 Census ... a "brickmaker" living in Brownhills (Staffs)
1871 Census ... a "former brickmaker" living in Whittington (Staffs).
Married ... Sarah ELSON on 21-Sep-1812 in Whittington (Staffs)
Buried ... St Giles Church, Whittington (Staffs) on 20-Apr-1875
Children ... Catherine (1812), John (1817), Joseph (1822), Samuel (1830)

If any one can help me with this it'd be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Where did you find the information of Joseph's birth in 1787/1788?

gham,

Thanks for your quick response, the YoB I've listed is based on:-

1841 census, age shown as 50 (#1)
1851 census, age shown as 53 (#2)
1861 census, age shown as 73
1871 census, age shown as 84

#1 - As you may know the ages shown on the 1841 census are rounded down to the "nearest 5 years " so his year of birth could be as early as 1787 or as late as 1791.

#2 - An error when the census was orginally filled in (by then he should be 63'ish) ... unless he had a reason to lie about his age?

As you can see other than the '51 census it's quite easy to calculate his YoB back to about 1787/1788.

Although Joseph and his family spent most of thier life in Staffs, each census shows his place of birth as "Birmingham, Warwickshire"

Hope it helps

Regards

Nick

did you see the igi record of joseph marklew chr. 1 8 1796 colwich stafford. father john marklew mother martha.

i know you think he was b. bham and earlier than this but just wondered if youd looked at this one.

clutching at straws i think!!

That IGI record looks very relevant to me...Colwich to Brownhills however is 15 miles or so....Joseph could 'easily' have been born in 1798 if you read the 1851 census as correct- age 53, and therefore Joseph would have been 43 in 1841 not 50 as the census shows..

Hi guys,

Yeah I also spotted that IGI entry, at first I also though it could be the Joseph I'm looking for but since then I've dismissed it, here's why:-

Joseph married Sarah (ELSON) 21-Sep-1812, this I have had confirmed by numerous sources, they appear to have got married as Sarah was pregnant at the time (she gave birth to thier first child Catherine before the end of the year .. 1812).

If born just prior to being christened (i.e. Aug 1796) he'd only be 16 years of age when married ... this I think is unlikely (but not impossible)

What swayed it for me was the fact that I'm fairly sure I've found the Joseph shown on the IGI record and the rest of his family. They appear to come from the Lancs area and are distant relations (non of which are brickmakers).

I've also found other MARKLEW families living in the Brownhills / Whittington areas which have are headed by individuals born 1770-1790 (also born in Birmingham) who are also Brickmakers (known to be a handed down family business)

I believe these individuals to be brothers of the Joseph I'm looking for but cannot find any info to prove it.

Anyone got any other ideas as I'm open to any as I'm desperate to resolve this ... ?

Nick

one thing to remember though is that the date is a christening not a birth. although most children are christened within a few months some are not until much later. one i found was about 5yrs before he was christened. obviously your other evidence counts for a lot so it probably isnt your man. hope someone can help.
