Baptism Entry Query

Lady Penelope

master brummie
Last week, on the trail of an ancestor, I visited Lichfield Record Office. I found the baptism in April 1714 for Roseabella Lowe. However, when I looked at the father's name it had 'Mr Loe of Horsebrook' (a district of Brewood). When Roseabella married in 1743 she was entered in the register as Mrs Roseabella Lowe. This was in St Margaret's in Great Barr and at the time no father's name was entered. I realise that my question is out of the forum area but I just wondered if anyone has any bright ideas on how to find out the christian name of her father. The librarian reckons that he had a bob or two and didn't need to put his name down. His first child, Elizabeth, who was born in 1711, was also entered in this way. I went to Brewood on Friday to see what the library had to offer but although there was a lot of info there was nothing on my man of mystery. I know her mother's name was Eleanor from her will (she was buried in 1766 at Cooper's piece / porch? - it mentions 'from Aldridge')and I found a marriage for 1708 for a Thomas & Eleanor from Bilston at St Peter's, Wolverhampton. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Hi, I found a Baptism record for Elizabeth Lowe on 19th August 1711 at St Marys, Lichfield Staffs - Fathers name George Lowe. You can check yourself on the Mormon website "Familysearch" all the best, J.

Hi Lyn, the father's name nearly always went on the birth entries - a whole page of them in this case but not on mine, just Mr - typical. Yes, that's right the father didn't appear pre-1837 on MC's. I put that in in case someone suggested it. It always makes me smile that throughout time the father appeared on baptisms and not the mother - after she'd done all the work!

totally agree with pen...:D

Are you certain that the 'Mrs' on the marriage is a mistake and she wasn't a widow?

Does Eleanor's will make clear mention of her daughter by her married name? Are there any other relatives mentioned?

Have you looked for a will for the father (not easy without his name I know)? And if he did have money would there be tax records perhaps?

Could the family have moved to Great Barr before her wedding? I found a baptism for a John Low at Great Barr, father listed as Thomas...

Thank you MWS - apparently the Mrs denotes someone belonging to the gentry (the Archivist at Lichfield explained this). She was definitely Roseabella Loe on the Baptism record and Mrs Roseabella Lowe on her marriage entry.

Eleanor's will is short and to the point basically it says that she leaves to her daughter Roseabella Geast all her goods etc. Nobody else is mentioned.

I searched the wills but nothing came to light for Brewood (which was a peculiar until 1847) and I've yet to look for a will at Stafford. This is something I must do regardless of the lack of Christian name. I have tried the National Archives but nothing jumped out at me.

I shall certainly follow up the John Low you mention - thank you so much for finding that. Thomas is a good contender for R's father's name as her eldest son was Thomas. Looking very promising! They had definitely moved before her wedding as it was at St Margaret's Great Barr, not Brewood. Again - thanks again for your help.
