Baileys Cottages, Ward End

Hi,
on the 1911 census, my grandmother was living a 1 Baileys Cottages, Alum Rock Rd, Ward End.
Does anyone know exactly where this is, and are there any remaining signs? Thanks

they are not listed on the online electoral roll as Bailey's cottages, nor on any map or in directories that I have looked at. It would probably be possible to work out where they were from looking at the other names around her on the census, if you could tell us her name , so that we could find the entry.

Hi,
Thanks for trying to help. The head of the household was Maria Amelia Stokes, age 44, a widow, occupation 'working in fields'
Others listed on the census are her children Amelia (my grandmother) age 19, William age 15, Sarah age 13 and Henry age 10.
Also recorded is James Livesey, described as a visitor.

It looks from the 1911 census that they were towards the end of Alum Rock Road. On the one side is 711 Alum Rock Road and on the other after no 2 Bailey's Cottages it's Ivy Cottage which is listed as Alum Rock Road corner of Burney Lane.

I think the no's must have changed since then because the last house now before Burney Lane appears to be 877.

I don't think the numbers have changed. IIt is just that the area around there was a bit sparse of houses then. Below is a map c 1916 (so probably just pre-WW1, of the area of Alum rock road before Burney lane . I think Bailey's cottages must have been the ones in red opposite Thornton road. Burney lane is coloured blue. The map c 1938 is also below, which would seem to indicate that the cottages had been demolished by that time, and replaced by a series of terraces.

Yes, that's much more likely and what a difference! And in just 20 years or so.

Having been up and down there thousands of times it's hard to imagine that there were once so much open space.
